A vacuum is a space without matter and (therefore) without pressure. In everyday language, people also use the term void. Vacuum play therefore means an experience in which the air disappears (in certain places), which can create a very special feeling. Vacuum play is all about creating a vacuum around the body or specific parts of it. And you can do some really fun things with that, and there is plenty available to buy, too!

The tingling skin sensation of vacuum play

Vacuum play

Why would anyone want to put themselves in a vacuum? For many people it's all about the intense sensations and the feeling of surrender. When the air is sucked away, increased pressure is created on the skin, which can lead to a mix of tingling and heightened body awareness. On top of that, the psychological aspect plays a big role; the feeling of immobilisation and surrender can be extremely exciting for both the giver and the receiver.

The versatility of vacuum play

There are various ways to play with vacuum, depending on your interests, preferences and curiosity. A popular method is the use of vacuum pumps, often applied to the nipples, breasts or genitals (pussy & cock), to increase blood flow and intensify sensitivity. Another option is the vacuum bed or vacuum bag, in which the whole body is placed in an airtight environment, creating a feeling of complete immobilisation. Then there are of course the vacuum cups or cupping cups that can be used on different parts of the body to create unique sensations. And last but not least, there is the vacuum mask, which can in turn be part of breath play.

A vacuum bed or bag is not only used for immobilisation, but can also be a great tool for sensory deprivation. Because you can hardly move and external stimuli are reduced, it can feel as if you are drifting into a deep, meditative state. Some people even experience a kind of 'floaty' feeling, as if they are weightless. This can be incredibly soothing, provided you feel safe and can breathe properly.

What happens to the skin?

When the skin is exposed to vacuum, all sorts of things happen beneath the surface. The negative pressure pulls the skin and underlying tissue upwards, which stimulates blood circulation. This can lead to temporary swelling and redness, and in some cases to small bruises or blood blisters. Although these effects are usually harmless and disappear within a few days, it is important to be aware of the impact on the body, especially if these body parts are visible to the outside world. Nobody wants to show up at the office the next day with remarkable marks that are hard to explain.

Risks and safety

As with any kind of play within BDSM, vacuum play carries certain risks. Excessive or prolonged exposure to vacuum can lead to skin damage, nerve damage or circulation problems. It is therefore important to keep a close eye on your partner and to make agreements about what to do when the pain increases in intensity (too much).
Always start with low pressure and build it up slowly, constantly checking how the receiver is feeling. And don't forget: a vacuum is great for your vacuum cleaner, but your body needs a bit of air now and then. So don't go on for too long.

Tips for playing safely

Invest in high-quality equipment designed specifically for vacuum play. Avoid improvised tools that can produce unpredictable results. DIY projects are mostly fun with other hobbies.

Discuss your expectations, limits and any worries beforehand. A good conversation can prevent a lot of misunderstandings and discomfort.

Keep an eye on the duration of the vacuum sessions. Prolonged exposure can be harmful, so set a timer and be willing to take breaks. The sub doesn't need to be broken.

After the session, it is important to inspect the skin for signs of damage. If necessary, use soothing lotions to reduce any irritation.

Drink enough water. Staying hydrated helps keep your skin supple and elastic, which makes the vacuum effect more pleasant and speeds up the recovery of small bruises. It's not a bad idea to drink a big glass of water afterwards.

For beginners: if you're playing with cups or pumps and can't get them off, gently press against the skin next to the edge of the cup. This breaks the vacuum without pulling on the cup, which prevents pain and unnecessary skin irritation. Never force it!

Play with temperature for extra sensation

If you're already familiar with vacuum play, you can combine it with temperature play to take the experience to another level. For example, by lightly warming the cups beforehand (with warm water, never directly with a heat source!) or by putting them in the fridge for a while, you add an extra dimension of warmth or coolness to the play. This can make the sensations on the skin more intense and leads to surprising reactions.

You can also choose to warm up the skin first before you begin. Warm skin reacts differently to vacuum than cold skin; the effect can feel more intense and more pleasant. Play with temperature by, for example, using warm oil or a warm compress beforehand – or, if you like contrast, try a cold object before the vacuum play.

Bonus fact

Did you know that vacuum play influences can be found in traditional medical practices, such as cupping therapy? Of course with a completely different purpose, but the principle of suction on the skin is surprisingly universal.
