Top 20 Film Recommendations About BDSM
1. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
Okay, personally I absolutely do not consider this the best BDSM film (to put it mildly), but of course it is the best known. At least among "the general public". That's why I'm kicking off the list with this one anyway.
This film, based on the bestseller of the same name by E.L. James, tells the story of the young, innocent Anastasia Steele, who falls for the rich and mysterious Christian Grey. Their relationship soon takes a spicy turn when Christian reveals his penchant for BDSM. Although the film received mixed reviews, it did open the door to mainstream discussions about BDSM. Sadly, with its fair share of prejudice.
2. Secretary (2002)
If you thought office jobs were boring, then you haven't seen Secretary yet. This film follows Lee Holloway, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who, after a stay in a psychiatric institution, goes to work as a secretary for the eccentric lawyer E. Edward Grey (no, no relation to Christian). What begins as a traditional working relationship soon develops into a BDSM dynamic between boss and employee. The film balances on a thin line between dark humour and eroticism, and shows how two people can find each other in their own unique desires.
3. The Duke of Burgundy (2014)
For those who love a touch of arthouse with their eroticism, The Duke of Burgundy is a must-see. As far as I'm concerned, it's an absolute top performer when it comes to portraying the double layers and contradictions within BDSM.
This film revolves around the complex relationship between two women: Cynthia and Evelyn. While Evelyn prefers the submissive role, Cynthia takes the dominant position. The film explores the boundaries of desire, power and obsession, all wrapped up in a visually stunning style.
4. Belle de Jour (1967)
Let's take a leap back in time to the classic Belle de Jour. This French film, directed by Luis Buñuel, tells the story of Séverine, a young housewife who works as a prostitute during the day while her husband unsuspectingly follows his daily routine. Although the film isn't explicitly about BDSM, the theme of submission and desire plays a central role. Plus, it's always fun to see how people in the 1960s handled such spicy subjects.
5. La Vénus à la Fourrure (2013)
This French film, directed by Roman Polanski, is an adaptation of the play of the same name, which in turn is based on the iconic novel Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. In this two-hander drama, everything revolves around power, lust and manipulation. The female lead, played by Emmanuelle Seigner, takes control in an audition that slowly turns into a game of dominance and submission. Subtle, psychological and with a hefty dose of irony.
6. R100 (2013)
Japanese cinema and BDSM? That gives you a film like R100, a bizarre, surreal and downright hilarious take on submission and extreme fetishes. The film follows a man who signs up to an exclusive BDSM club, without knowing that his daily life will be affected by it in unexpected and absurd ways. Think of dominatrixes who appear out of nowhere and humiliate him in public, without any warning. This film is a trip, but one you probably won't forget in a hurry.
7. Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (2017)
This film tells the true story of William Moulton Marston, the psychologist and comic creator who came up with Wonder Woman. What many people don't know is that he had a polyamorous relationship with his wife and their lover, and that BDSM had a major influence on the creation of his superheroine. With compelling performances and a fascinating story, this is a recommendation for fans of both comic history and BDSM.
8. SM-rechter (2009)
This Belgian film is based on the true story of a judge who put his career at risk by practising BDSM with his wife out of love. The film offers a nuanced and human perspective on a relationship in which BDSM plays an important role, but also on how the outside world can react to it with incomprehension. A beautiful film about a theme that sadly is still very much alive. BDSM is still often (wrongly) seen as shady or even dark. A beautiful film, by the way, a real recommendation.
9. Cruising (1980)
In this cult film by William Friedkin, Al Pacino goes undercover in New York's gay BDSM and leather scene to track down a murderer. The film was controversially received at the time because of its explicit and daring portrayal of the subculture, but has since become a classic of the genre.
10. Naboer (2005)
A dark psychological thriller from Norway in which a man, after the break-up with his girlfriend, ends up in a strange and manipulative BDSM-like relationship with his mysterious female neighbours. The film plays with reality and madness, and is an intriguing viewing experience.
11. Perfect Skin (2018)
This film mixes body horror with BDSM and fetishism. It centres on a young woman who is abducted by a troubled tattoo artist and subjected to an extreme form of body modification. Not for the faint of stomach, but absolutely fascinating.
12. Walk All Over Me (2007)
A lighter film in the genre, in which a woman poses as a professional dominatrix to get out of trouble, but soon ends up in a dangerous situation. It's a mix of crime and comedy, and an entertaining take on the subject.
13. Koirat Eivät Käytä Housuja (2019)
This Finnish film (with the poetic title Dogs Don’t Wear Pants) tells the story of a widower who processes his grief by entering into an obsessive relationship with a dominatrix. The film offers a raw and emotionally profound look at BDSM as a way of processing trauma.
14. '9½ Weeks' (1986)
'9½ Weeks' is actually more of an erotic thriller. It follows the stormy affair between art gallery employee Elizabeth and the mysterious John. Their relationship is characterised by intense sexual games and power games that are both exciting and destructive. The film attracted a lot of attention at the time because of its explicit scenes and remains a cult classic for fans of the genre.
15. 'Crash' (1996)
'Crash' from 1996, directed by David Cronenberg, is a fascinating film about people who find sexual arousal in car crashes. Although it doesn't follow the traditional BDSM route, the theme of fetish, pain and pleasure plays a central role. It's a film that makes you think about the limits of human desires and how far some people are prepared to go to satisfy their lusts.
16. 'The Piano Teacher' (2001)
This Austrian film tells the story of Erika Kohut, a piano teacher with a complex personality and a hidden life full of masochistic desires. When a young student shows interest in her, a destructive relationship begins that explores the boundaries of power and submission. It's an intense film that doesn't leave you unmoved and makes you reflect on the deeper layers of human desires.
17. The Night Porter (1974)
This Italian film, directed by Liliana Cavani, tells the story of a former SS officer who works as a night porter in Vienna in 1957. He recognises one of his hotel guests as Lucia, a concentration camp survivor with whom he had a complex, sadomasochistic relationship during the war. Their renewed relationship raises questions about guilt, shame and the limits of love and obsession.
18. Quills (2000)
In this historical drama, Geoffrey Rush plays the notorious Marquis de Sade, who keeps writing his scandalous stories while confined in an asylum. The film examines themes of censorship, sexual expression and the thin line between art and perversion. Although it isn't explicitly about BDSM, it does shed light on the origins of sadism and the impact of the writings of the Marquis de Sade.
19. Preaching to the Perverted (1997)
This British cult film follows a young Christian infiltrator who is tasked with gathering evidence against a BDSM club in London. As he delves deeper into the subculture, he is confronted with his own prejudices and desires. The film offers a humorous and provocative look at the BDSM scene and the clash between conservative values and alternative lifestyles.
20. In the Realm of the Senses (1976)
This Japanese film, directed by Nagisa Oshima, is based on a true story and follows the obsessive love affair between a hotel maid and her employer. Their passion escalates into an all-consuming sexual relationship with strong elements of BDSM, which ultimately leads to extreme and tragic consequences. The film is known for its explicit content and explores the limits of lust and destruction.
