A diaper fetish, why is it such a taboo?

Baby play and/or having a diaper fetish are perhaps the biggest taboos in the BDSM scene. Why is that? What makes a diaper fetish different from a fetish for feet or high heels? Those are far more widely accepted. But few people can imagine why on earth you would want to wear a nappy, especially if you aren't incontinent, in which case it is a necessary evil. So it's no wonder that so few people dare to come out about this fetish. A shame, because you would expect open-mindedness from a BDSM scene in particular, but unfortunately... that doesn't apply to baby play and/or having a diaper fetish.

What is a diaper fetish?
A diaper fetish, also known as a 'diaper fetish' or 'diaper lover' (DL), is a form of fetishism in which adults get pleasure or satisfaction from wearing nappies. This can range from a feeling of comfort and security to sexual arousal. It is important to stress that this has nothing to do with paedophilia; it is about the person wearing the nappy and the feelings it evokes. Some compare it to other material-focused fetishes, such as a preference for latex or leather.
Different subgroups
Within this community there are various subgroups. There are the 'Adult Babies' (AB), adults who enjoy taking on a baby role, complete with nappies, dummies and sometimes even cots. On the other side are the 'Diaper Lovers' (DL), who mainly enjoy wearing nappies without the need to take on a baby role. These two groups are often referred to together as ABDL.
A diaper fetish can therefore be part of baby play, but it doesn't have to be. It can also be experienced completely separately from ageplay. The reverse is also true. If you love baby play, that doesn't mean you also have a diaper fetish.
Why nappies?
The reasons behind these preferences are varied and personal. For some, wearing a nappy offers a feeling of safety and security, comparable to wearing comfortable clothes. Others experience it as a form of escapism, a way to escape the responsibilities of adult life. And yes, for some, sexual arousal plays a part. It is similar to other fetishes in which specific garments or materials play an important role in experiencing pleasure.
Another possibility can be the feeling of dependence or humiliation, when a Dominant orders you to wear a nappy and forces you to use it. Overcoming your inhibitions and shame, especially when the nappy starts to "smell".
But whatever the starting point, it's all fine. There is nothing wrong with it. That is why it is such a shame that even within the BDSM scene there seems to be so little room for acceptance of this experience.
Misconceptions and prejudices
Unfortunately, many misconceptions still cling to this subject. A common prejudice is that people with a diaper fetish must by definition be paedophiles. This is absolutely untrue. The fetish is about the individual themselves and has nothing to do with sexual attraction to children. It is similar to other object-focused fetishes, such as a preference for certain fabrics or garments.
And do you hear someone talk about their nappy preference and feel you simply must have an opinion about it? Just keep your mouth shut. You're better off staying quiet if you have nothing sensible to add anyway. Why would you feel the need to announce that it's not your thing, or that you can't understand it? Your neighbour might look at you the same way if she knew what you get up to. But who cares? Live and let live. So many people, so many preferences, and as long as nobody is harmed, there is nothing wrong with it. Just let someone be. You'd want that for yourself too, wouldn't you?!
The social aspects
In the Netherlands and beyond there are online communities and forums where ABDLs can share experiences and stories. These platforms offer a safe environment for people to talk about their feelings and experiences without judgement. It helps many to realise they are not alone and gives a sense of community and understanding. And that feeling of "there are others like me" is so important.
Mommydom.nl
