Sometimes you come across techniques within BDSM that spark your curiosity, even if you have no experience with them yet. Hypnosis is one of those. It might sound like something from a magician's act or a therapy session, but within the BDSM scene it takes on its own sensual meaning.

What is hypnosis, actually?
Hypnosis is a technique in which someone is brought into a trance-like state, characterised by deep relaxation, heightened concentration and increased receptiveness to suggestions. In this state, conscious thinking moves into the background for a while, which leaves the subconscious more open to new ideas and experiences. Within BDSM, it can be used to intensify the experience, hand over control or explore certain fantasies.
Imagine this: you are lying relaxed, eyes closed, while your Dominant guides you into deep relaxation with a soft voice. Slowly you feel your body growing heavier and your thoughts slowing down, and you surrender to the suggestions your Dominant whispers. Perhaps you feel a tingling, a warmth, or a sense of floating. These sensations can vary from person to person, but the common element is the deep state of surrender and connection that arises.
Why hypnosis within BDSM?
Within BDSM, everything revolves around the play of control, sensation and surrender. Hypnosis fits in perfectly here. It offers a unique way to let a sub focus on the here and now, on the sensations flowing through the body. The trance-like state can be a meditative experience in which the sub surrenders completely to the Dominant's lead. It also adds an element of ritual and ceremony to the session, which deepens the experience.
It is not merely a physical experience; it also touches emotional and energetic layers. The trance can release old tensions, both physically and emotionally. For some subs it can be a form of catharsis (emotional cleansing), a moment of letting go and healing. The ritual aspect of hypnosis can also contribute to a sense of connection and trust between Dominant and sub.
Risks and precautions
Hypnosis comes with specific risks:
Psychological effects
Some people may feel confused, emotional or disoriented after a hypnosis session.
Unwanted suggestions
An inexperienced or unethical hypnotist can give harmful suggestions, whether unintentionally or deliberately.
Memory loss
In some cases, people cannot remember what happened during the trance, which can be confusing.
That is why it is essential to:
Always make clear agreements about what will happen during the session.
Ensure good communication and trust between Dominant and sub.
Check beforehand that the sub has no psychological conditions that could get worse.
Always create a safe and comfortable environment for the session.
What to do after a hypnosis session?
After a hypnosis session, it is important to give the sub the time to return fully to a normal level of consciousness. This can take a few minutes. Provide a calm environment, offer water and talk through the experiences of the session. This helps with processing the experience and strengthens the bond between Dominant and sub.
Is hypnosis arousing?
There are indications that it can increase sexual arousal. Because of the heightened receptiveness to suggestions, sensations can be experienced more intensely. Some people even report experiencing an orgasm through hypnosis, without physical stimulation. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as a "hands-free orgasm". However, the effectiveness and experience of hypnosis vary greatly from individual to individual.
Although there are anecdotal reports of people experiencing an orgasm through hypnosis, there is no scientific proof that hypnosis alone can cause an orgasm. However, the combination of relaxation, suggestion and heightened focus can contribute to increased sexual arousal and may make it easier to reach an orgasm.
How do you get started with hypnosis within BDSM?
If you are interested in exploring hypnosis within BDSM, here are a few steps to begin with:
Education
Read books, attend workshops or watch online tutorials about hypnosis and its application within BDSM.
Practice
Start with simple relaxation exercises and slowly build up to deeper trance states.
Feedback
After each session, talk about your experiences and feelings to improve the technique and strengthen the bond.
What is the difference between hypnosis and meditation?
1. The direction of attention:
With meditation you usually direct your attention inwards, with the aim of awareness, calm or letting go of thoughts. You stay in control and are often actively busy with not reacting to impulses or suggestions.
With hypnosis your attention is also guided inwards, but instead of letting everything go, you follow the other person's suggestions. It is therefore externally directed, often with a goal or experience that is suggested to you.
2. The role of another person:
You usually do meditation yourself. Even if you follow a guided meditation, you remain autonomous.
Hypnosis is usually done by another person (the hypnotist or Dominant) and often involves suggestion, role reinforcement or even behavioural influence within clear limits.
3. The state of consciousness:
Both bring you into an altered state of consciousness (often a lowered brainwave level), but with hypnosis this state is deliberately used to do something active: reinforce a belief, evoke a feeling, install a trigger or call up an experience.
With meditation, it is more about being itself that takes centre stage, not doing.
Within BDSM…
In a session where a sub relaxes completely through the use of voice, calm touch and rhythm, it can resemble meditation. But as soon as the Dominant adds suggestions such as:
"You feel how you slide ever deeper into my power… When I snap my fingers in a moment, you will forget everything…,"
you leave the realm of meditation and you are in hypnosis.
