For years you have been trying to suppress the feeling, to tuck it away. From the people around you, but above all from yourself. Yet that curiosity about BDSM keeps resurfacing, at the most convenient and usually the most inconvenient moments. You would love to dive into that discovery today, but something is holding you back. Shyness? Shame? Fear? Perhaps you have kept the feeling tucked away for years, dismissed it as a whim, something that will pass by itself one day. But "one day" turns out, after years, to be "never", and the desire remains and even seems to grow in intensity. Don't worry, you really are not the only one. Many people struggle with these feelings before they take the first step into the world of BDSM. Others, sadly, keep struggling their whole lives.

The first step into the world of BDSM: From doubt to discovery

A missed opportunity

I hear it regularly around me, or I receive emails from subs who for some reason would really love to arrange a meeting with me (for an experience, a workshop or a live date) but in the end never take that step. A shame, because it is mainly a missed opportunity for themselves. And that first step is precisely the one I cannot take for them (although I am often asked to). They really have to do that themselves. Only once that one, most important step has been taken, the step of acceptance, can I do anything for someone.

The first step towards freedom

It all begins with self-recognition and, above all, self-acknowledgement. It is completely natural and healthy to want to discover new things. Or perhaps it is a kind of primal longing for completeness of your whole "being", which you have carried with you for a very long time. That can be something sexual, but it can also be a "state of mind", such as a feeling of longing for submission or surrender.

It is important that you give this your attention. Allow yourself to explore these feelings without judgement. It is okay to be curious and to find out what appeals to you. And I say this honestly, based on experience: "By tucking away certain desires or parts of yourself, you only make them bigger..."

The bridge to understanding

If you have a partner, open communication and honesty are of great importance. Talking about your desires can be exciting, but it is an essential part of a healthy relationship. Start by sharing your thoughts and also listen to your partner's wishes and limits. This mutual understanding can strengthen your bond and add new dimensions to your intimacy. Perhaps your partner is open to your desires?

I see this happen often enough with couples who book a workshop with me. And how lovely it is that afterwards they have the right tools in hand to shape it further at home. During such a workshop I feel so much love and respect for one another. That stays very special every single time, that I get to be part of it for a moment.

Knowledge is power (and safety)

Before you throw yourself in at the deep end, it is wise to read up on the world of BDSM. There are countless sources available, from books and articles to workshops and online communities. Understanding the basic principles, such as the use of safewords, limits and the different roles, can help you explore with more confidence and safety. Even if you want to get started with BDSM on your own (for example with self-bondage or auto-bondage), it is useful to inform yourself properly beforehand about the dos & don'ts.

You are not the only one

There are many people who have the same feelings and desires. Platforms such as BDSMforyou or FetLife offer a space to connect with like-minded people, discover events and learn more about different practices within BDSM. To take that first step, it can help to discover that there are (many) more people like you. So you are not the only one, and realising that can give you the feeling that you are actually perfectly normal (which of course you also simply are).

You don't have to go all-in straight away. Begin with small experiments that lie within your comfort zone. This can range from light bondage with a scarf to exploring power dynamics in role play. Listen to yourself and your partner, and build up the experience slowly, as you both feel more comfortable. The slowest person determines the pace of the play. The other follows.

It is enormously important that you don't take steps that are too big right away. Keep the steps small and manageable, especially at the beginning, so that it stays genuinely fun. When you look back after a while, you will see for yourself how far you have already come. Even with those small steps. And why would you want to rush? BDSM is not a race, is it? It is mainly about the journey, not the end goal...

Listen to yourself

After every new experience it is important to reflect, for both of you. How did you feel during and after the experience? What did you enjoy and what didn't you? This self-reflection helps you understand your limits and preferences better and adapt future experiences for maximum pleasure and comfort. This applies to both of you, not just the receiver. For the giver it is at least as important.

Reflecting is an essential part of every journey of discovery, and that certainly applies to exploring BDSM. Here are a few reasons why reflection is so important:

1. Self-awareness and growth

By thinking about your experiences you gain a better insight into what you enjoy and what you don't. BDSM is all about consent and mutual pleasure, and by reflecting you can make more conscious choices that fit your needs and limits.

2. Understanding emotions

BDSM can evoke intense emotions, both positive and challenging. Perhaps you felt euphoric after a session, or perhaps insecure. By analysing your feelings, you can better understand why certain experiences affect you and how you can deal with that.

3. Improving communication with a partner

When you play with a partner, reflection helps you communicate better about what did and didn't work. This makes future sessions safer and more enjoyable. You can say what you want to experience more or less of, and so grow together.

4. Preventing unconscious patterns

Sometimes we unconsciously fall into certain patterns. Perhaps you keep crossing a limit without realising it, or you keep seeking the same type of experience while there is more to discover. Reflecting helps you approach your experience consciously and keep experimenting in a way that feels good.

5. Deeper experience and better sessions

BDSM is not only a physical experience; it takes place at least as much in your head and heart. By reflecting, you make room for depth. What made a particular experience special? How did you feel in the dynamic? What would you like to do differently? This helps you tune your next experience even better to your wishes.

In short, reflection ensures that your BDSM experience not only stays safe and respectful, but also becomes ever richer and more meaningful. So after an intense experience, take a moment to check in with yourself!
