“Role-playing: how realistic should you make it?” was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.

Various role-playing scenarios are played within BDSM. The most well-known is, of course, D/s, the role-play between a dominant and a sub or slave. Although for some people this may not really be experienced as role-play, but rather seen as a lifestyle. However, there are many more role-playing scenarios that can be played within BDSM. Below you will find the most common ones.

How far does role-playing go?

Use your imagination, and any role can be played. The only limits are the boundaries of your imagination and the other person’s off-limits. Within those parameters, you can move freely, and fantasies know no bounds. The more surprising you are, the more fun it can be. After all, 50% of it is about the unexpected.

Not every game will feel like role-play to everyone. Take Femdom, for example; that can absolutely feel like a lifestyle. A way of life colored by the intensity of both partners and where little is acted out. One role-play scenario may feel more realistic than another, but ultimately, it’s about what you both get out of it together.

How do you bring it to life?

You can go as far as you want, depending on your budget and how enthusiastic you are (or will be) about it. If the game is a one-time thing, you don’t need to pull out all the stops. That would be a waste, but if a certain role-play makes both of you happy, it’s naturally fun to dress it up further with clothing and props. There are so many fun things on the market…! Of course, you don’t have to buy everything at once; it’s actually much more fun to keep adding something new so it stays exciting and fresh.

If you enjoy it, you could sometimes switch roles. Not everyone is open to this, but ultimately, it’s up to you. Switching means switching from the dominant to the submissive role (or vice versa). That way, you get to know both roles well, and that can definitely work to your advantage in increasing the intensity of the play.

Building Up

If you’re just starting out, take it slow. BDSM isn’t an express train, but a slow-moving train that takes you past the most beautiful spots. Enjoy the ride. It is precisely this build-up that creates intensity (depth) and builds trust. Always take the time to discuss the play with each other afterward. What was exciting or surprising? And what wasn’t? It is precisely with this knowledge that you can dive deeper and deeper into the experience together. Above all, be honest with each other. Even if you found a certain action a bit less pleasant, because there’s nothing wrong with that and it’s incredibly important to know.

Role-playing as a lifestyle

I’m well aware of the discrepancy in this title, because it can never be both at the same time. However, some role-playing scenarios also lend themselves perfectly to a lifestyle, where the experience runs like a thread through your days. Maybe not always prominently present, but at least always latent. Think, for example, of Femdom or D/s. Depending on how you experience this yourselves, it may be a lifestyle rather than just a role-playing scenario.
