The risks of self-bondage
“The risks of self-bondage“ was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.
When I had only just got to know my sub, he told me that he had once been into self-bondage. He had a sort of body bag with a zip, and with a little hanger on the door (or something like that) he could zip up the body bag from behind, which left him trapped. How he eventually got free again, I honestly forgot. Apparently it (luckily) always went well, because otherwise he wouldn't be sitting here now. But I also know from him that it has sometimes led to tight spots. And yes, sometimes it does go wrong. Self-bondage is absolutely not without risk.

What is self-bondage?
Self-bondage is tying up your own body (bondage), without the involvement of another person. That is to say, tying yourself up to feel sexual pleasure, or simply for the enjoyment of being tied up.
There are various ways of achieving this. One option is to work with a time lock such as an Ice Lock. This lock holds for two hours until it springs open. Handy if you want the kick of helplessness but don't have a play partner. Do it safely, though, and make sure there is always an escape possible. After all, no play partner also means nobody to come and free you.
Ways of doing self-bondage
Other ways of being able to free yourself can be:
Hang the key on a piece of string above a burning candle, so that it takes a while before the string burns through. Of course, this is not entirely without risk. The candle can fall over, causing a fire and leaving you with no way to escape. It is also wise to calculate carefully that the key falls exactly where you can reach it.
Arrange with someone that they will come and free you at a certain time. Although then it is actually no longer self-bondage.
You can also freeze the key to the cuffs in an ice cube. It's just a matter of waiting.
Use a combination lock. Even if you know the combination, getting the lock open in the dark can become quite a tough task. To be safe, you can put a timer on the lighting, so that there is always an escape.
An old-fashioned clock can be used as an escape. Hang your key ring on one of the hands. When the hands point downwards, the key slides off by itself.
There are ready-made timer locks for sale. You can then set in advance when the lock should spring open. Such a lock could also be used as an escape lock.
The risks
Bondage in itself is already a risk, but then there is always someone near you who can do something. With self-bondage, though, you are on your own, and if you are stuck yourself, it becomes quite difficult when things get urgent. Because how do you keep it as safe as possible for yourself? Above you can already see a number of options you could use, but if panic suddenly breaks out, for whatever reason, these tips are no help at all. They all take too long. So you will always have to think about an escape that can be used in emergencies.
On top of that, self-bondage is sometimes combined with breath control. That makes it a very dangerous experience. It is no wonder that quite a few people die this way. The number of deaths from autoerotic asphyxiation in America is estimated at between 500 and 1,000 per year, and a large proportion of these fatal asphyxiations involved self-bondage (40 per cent). And of course that very kick is part of the thrill, but still...
