I get asked this quite regularly. Subs who definitely want to take a proper spanking, but who can't or don't want to go home with marks. Does the one rule out the other? I can be short and sweet about that: "No". You can still get a proper spanking without it leaving traces, so without marks. And I'm happy to tell you how to pull that off.

Red bum but no marks: The art of spanking without leaving traces

The most important thing is that you do not use materials that are thin. So a single tail is not an option. If you hit viciously with it, it leaves welts. The same goes for a cane. That also leaves its traces if you give a firm stroke with it. But there is plenty of fun to be had under the sun that can be used. There are a few things you do need to take into account, though.

Bare hands

With your hands you can deliver some hefty smacks, and it won't get further than a red bum. It can still feel fierce, though. Especially if you hit the same spot often enough...

The flogger

Not all impact toys are created equal. Some leave marks sooner than others. A soft flogger with wide tails spreads the impact and is less likely to leave marks than a thin whip. Definitely use a thick flogger and not a skinny one. The thin ones look innocent, but in the end they are nastier on the skin than the thick ones. So the thicker the flogger, the lower the chance of marks.

Paddles

Paddles are generally flat and wide. And anything flat and wide works well for a "mark-free" spanking. The bum gets redder and redder, but no welts appear. Do be careful with a paddle, though: hitting hard with a wooden paddle may not cause welts, but... it does cause bruising under the skin, so blue marks. And your sub doesn't want to go home with those either. So paddles are fine, as long as they aren't wooden paddles or paddles made of another hard material. Stick to paddles made of (PU) leather or suede, so paddles that flex a little.

Slappers

Slappers are mainly known for their lovely clapping sound, but they don't give deep impact. So you can happily slap the skin with them without leaving traces. Do make sure the slapper is wide enough, so that the impact is spread sufficiently. The narrower the slapper, the greater the chance of welts.

The right spots

If you want to give a spanking without marks, not only the material matters but also the place. Focus on areas with more muscle mass, such as the buttocks or thighs. Avoid bones and joints; they are more sensitive and show marks sooner. Use the flat hand instead of the fingers, or a broad impact toy, to spread the impact and minimise the chance of bruises.

Intensity and duration

Of course, force and the number of strikes also play a big part in whether or not marks are left. Start slowly and build up the intensity gradually. The colder the skin, the greater the chance of marks. This means you need to prepare the skin as well as possible and build up the intensity of the smacks, but also, for example, that the room temperature is pleasantly warm.

Every moment is different

Everyone reacts differently to taking smacks. What leaves no marks on one person may well be visible on another. Pay attention to the body's signals and be prepared to adjust your approach. The chance of marks differs not only per body, but also per moment. If someone is stressed, the skin reacts differently than when someone is relaxed. A stressed skin reacts more intensely to the smacks than a relaxed skin.

Aftercare

If you want to keep the chance of marks as small as possible, gently massage the areas that were hit to stimulate blood flow and reduce any swelling. A cold compress can also help prevent bruising.
