In this blog we look at corporal punishment. In other words: physical punishment. It might sound rather old-fashioned and medieval, but it really isn't that bad. Corporal punishment has little to do with penal camps or nasty child-rearing methods from the last century. It forms an essential part of BDSM, in which people very deliberately seek out this tension and intensity. Perhaps it is a name you don't use all that often. Smacking, punishing, whipping, spanking, a corrective slap: they all sound so much easier.

What is the effect of corporal punishment?

What do we mean by corporal punishment?

Put simply, corporal punishment is a physical punishment in which the body is used directly to undergo a corrective or disciplinary measure. Quite a mouthful. It can range from a playful smack on the bum to more intense forms such as a firm lash of the whip. Within BDSM, corporal punishment is not so much about punishment as about an experience of power, control and – let's definitely not forget – pleasure.

What does it all include?

Corporal punishment can be all sorts of things, and the range of possibilities is astonishingly broad. There is of course classic spanking, which many people see as an accessible way to experience punishment. It is often the starting point for people who are curious about BDSM. The first little flogger or perhaps an ordinary wooden spoon, how exciting. And then those first smacks, given almost timidly.

Then there are the more intense forms, such as hitting with a paddle, cane or whip. Each of these 'tools' has a different impact – both physically and emotionally. A paddle can give a deeper, thudding pain, whereas a cane often gives a sharp, burning impact.

In addition, less obvious things also fall under corporal punishment, such as the use of clamps or clothes pegs, or whatever else you want to punish with. The range is huge... as far as your creativity stretches.

Why do people enjoy this?

Physical sensations can be liberating, even euphoric. For many people it is not just about the pain itself, but about the emotional depth that comes with it. It is an intense way of experiencing power and control, for both the giver and the receiver.

For the receiver it can help them let go, surrender completely to the situation, and even explore and push their limits. It creates a space in which they can feel safe enough to be vulnerable, and that can be liberating. The idea that someone else is in control offers a certain calm. When you know you can trust your (dominant) partner completely, pain – within that context – becomes a kind of gift. Even a very intense gift.

For the Dominant it offers a different kind of satisfaction. It is often not only about handing out punishment, but about carefully building an atmosphere in which the receiver can blossom (and grow). And yes, inflicting pain can give both a physical and a mental kick. However, it also demands enormous responsibility and care. It is all about the balance between giving and taking, in which both parties know exactly where they stand. And that is precisely where the magic lies.

The effect

The effect of it is therefore much more than just a red mark on the skin. It can bring about a deep emotional reaction. For some it works therapeutically; it can help them process (or rather loosen up) emotions, release tension or even overcome trauma. It may sound far-fetched, but the physical expression of pain can sometimes be a mental cleansing. Think about it: how often have you yourself felt a kind of release after something physical, such as exercise or an intense experience? In this context it works in exactly the same way.

Others enjoy the powerful connection it creates between the giver and the receiver. The bond that arises from the trust and surrender it requires can awaken deep feelings of intimacy. And that makes it all so special...
