The ins & outs of blood play

Blood play is a collective term for all kinds of play that involve blood in some way. That doesn't mean blood comes gushing out; it can also be very subtle. Think of needle play, for example. As soon as you pull the needles out of the skin, a little drop of blood can easily appear. This can also happen with play piercings or knifeplay, but also when someone is hit with a cane or single tail until they bleed.

Blood cupping
A very obvious example is of course blood cupping, or in Dutch: "Bloedcupping". This is really just cupping, but you prick a few little holes in the skin first, before placing the cup on the skin. This means that as soon as the cup is drawn into a vacuum, it pulls blood out of those tiny holes. It often brings relief for pain complaints and is even said to help with high blood pressure. It is also known as "wet cupping".
Does it really work? No idea, but it is certainly played with within BDSM. And so it forms part of blood play as well.
Hematomania
This is a psychological term for someone with a blood fetish. Yes, that exists too, and you don't even have to be a vampire for it. These people get aroused by seeing blood and, in exceptional cases, they occasionally drink it. Tricky, especially when it isn't your own blood, because all kinds of diseases can be passed on.
Dangers of blood play
If you think of blood, think of AIDS too. Make sure things are done safely. Of course with regard to AIDS, but also think of infections, so make sure you have good hygiene and disinfection. Use sterile gloves and good disinfectants, and make sure your blood does not come into contact with the other person's blood.
