Definition of a munch
A munch is an informal, public gathering for people interested in BDSM, where no play takes place, but where you can meet others in a safe setting, talk and share experiences. It usually takes place at a neutral location such as a café or restaurant.

What is a munch? A meeting with like-minded people
Ever heard the word “munch” going around? For anyone who has never heard of it: a munch is a low-threshold gathering for people from the BDSM and kink world. No whips, no latex, no slaves on their hands and knees. Just you, in your jeans or summer dress, at a table in a café, restaurant or pub-restaurant. Chatting, laughing, sharing stories, getting to know people and/or just listening.
Why does a munch exist, actually?
A munch came about from the need to bring kink out of the shadows. To be able to meet each other without immediately ending up in a dark cellar or having to squeeze yourself into a leather kinky outfit. To make BDSM something you can talk about in a way that feels safe and relaxed. And to discover that you are not the only one with your longing for surrender, power and/or control.
You can see it as a first introduction to a world you may have been dreaming of for years, but which until now only existed on your screen. The first step towards “real” contact. Because yes, all that daydreaming and fantasising online sounds wonderful, but in the end you want to feel that you are not alone. And that is already a very important step in starting with BDSM. Because you really are not the only one! So you are not crazy or weird.
What happens at a munch (and what doesn't)?
The nice thing about a munch is that you don't have to perform. There is no dress code, no play, no dominant or submissive behaviour expected. Everyone is equal. You simply sit at a table. With a cola, a glass of wine, a beer or a hot chocolate. The atmosphere is open and welcoming. People talk about everything to do with BDSM, kink, relationships, safety, doubt and desire. But just as easily about work, cats, holidays or whatever comes into your head. You can talk about kinky things, but you don't have to.
What doesn't happen? Sexual acts and/or BDSM play elements. You don't need to worry that you'll suddenly end up in a situation where your boundaries are pushed. A munch is social from beginning to end. So even if you come alone, you can trust that you are welcome as you are. And that you'll simply go home again, the way you came. With your clothes still on.
Exciting, but worth it - especially for beginners
Pretty nerve-racking, that first time. Especially if you have hidden or pushed away your desires for years. Because suddenly you can talk about it with others, like-minded people, who understand your insecurities and fears. That is exactly why munches are so important, for anyone who is curious, or struggling, or just coming out as a sub, switch or dominant. You don't need to know or understand everything already. You only need to be who you are, at that moment.
Most munch organisers understand how you feel better than anyone. Many munches offer the option to make contact beforehand. A message via Fetlife, an e-mail, or a text. Often you can arrange in advance to walk in together for a moment. Or to be recognisable to each other. That takes away so much tension.
Fetlife and other announcements: where do you find a munch?
Most munches are announced on Fetlife.com – an international platform for kinksters. You create a (free) profile there (tip: choose a name that suits you, but doesn't make you immediately recognisable if you want to stay anonymous) and search under ‘Events’. You can then filter by region or country, and you'll see an overview of planned munches and other gatherings.
In the Netherlands there are regular munches in cities such as Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Groningen, Eindhoven, Arnhem, and many more. Some are small-scale and intimate, others a bit bigger with a regular group of visitors. There are even themed munches: for young kinksters, for women, for switches and so on.
You can sometimes also find announcements through Telegram groups, Discord servers or local BDSM sites. But Fetlife is still the central place where most gatherings come together.
How do you know if a munch suits you?
You only know once you go. You can read a hundred stories, but in the end it's about how you feel there. Are these your kind of people? Do you feel safe? Do you have nice conversations? Do you laugh?
But also give yourself time. The first time can be overwhelming. Your head is full of impressions, you don't know where to start and you may talk more to yourself than to others. That's okay too. Maybe the second time you will sit down at that table with that couple you thought: “they look so nice.” Maybe the third time you'll even stay until closing time, without realising how quickly the time went.
And if it really isn't your place? Then at least you tried. And the fact that you took the step already says so much about your strength and curiosity.
A munch as a foundation for your BDSM journey
A munch is sometimes the beginning of a friendship, a relationship, a mentoring path or a community where you are welcome to come home. Not infrequently, the most beautiful conversations about boundaries, trauma, desires and growth start there. It is the place where you learn that BDSM isn't only about play, but above all about humanity. And that can simply begin at a table or at the bar, in that café near you.
What I'd like to leave you with
So if you're hesitating: just go. Get in touch with the organiser. Ask if someone can meet you at the door. Wear something you feel good in and above all be yourself. Really. You have nothing to prove. At most to yourself.
And who knows... maybe in a while you'll be sitting in that café too, with a bitterbal in your hand, listening to a shy newcomer whispering: “I thought I was the only one.”
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about munches
What exactly is a munch?
A munch is an informal gathering for people interested in BDSM, usually held at a neutral place such as a café or restaurant, without any BDSM play taking place.
Do I need experience to go to a munch?
No, munches are especially for beginners too. It is a low-threshold way to meet people from the BDSM scene and ask questions without obligations or expectations.
What do I wear to a munch?
Normal, everyday clothes are usually preferred. Because a munch takes place in a public space, kinky clothing is generally discouraged unless the organisation says otherwise.
Do I have to register for a munch?
That differs per organisation. Some munches are freely accessible, others ask for a short registration beforehand. Always check the announcement or website of the munch in question.
Is a munch anonymous, or do I have to introduce myself?
You decide what you share. Many people use a nickname. There is room for conversation, but nothing is compulsory. Respect for privacy is an important part of the atmosphere at a munch.
