“Attention to hygiene: how to really clean your toys properly“ was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.

In the BDSM world, hygiene is perhaps just as important as consent and trust, especially if you work as a Pro Domme or commercial Mistress and deal with different subs. You can create the most beautiful session, but if your equipment isn't clean and safe, you take unnecessary risks. Not only for yourself, but above all for the person in your hands. A sub surrenders completely to you, including the trust that you will treat his or her body with care. You must never betray that trust. Looking after your toys properly is therefore not an afterthought, but an essential part of your craftsmanship as a Dominant.

Attention to hygiene: how to really clean your toys properly

Ropes and other fibres

Rope gives you something to hold on to and can bring a sub into complete surrender. But a rope that smells musty or is full of grime takes the magic away immediately. If you use natural fibre rope, such as hemp or jute, it is wise to treat it with a little oil (for example jojoba) before use. That keeps the fibres supple and prevents splitting. But be careful: oil can hold on to bacteria. So wash your ropes after every use. Cotton ropes can go in the washing machine at a low temperature. Afterwards, hang them up neatly to dry, out of the sun and with plenty of air. Natural fibre ropes are better washed by hand and then rolled up tightly to keep them in shape.

Leather: full of character but delicate

Leather items such as cuffs, masks or whips require special care. Leather breathes and lives, and cannot simply be held under the tap. For surface cleaning you can use Meliseptol® spray, a disinfectant suitable for medical use. Spray it onto a cloth and wipe down the leather. Never submerge leather in water, because it dries out and loses its strength. After cleaning you can use leather grease or a special conditioner to keep it supple. That way you not only extend the life of your equipment, but also make sure it is clean and hygienic for every session.

Stainless steel, glass and silicone toys

Toys made of stainless steel or glass are the easiest to clean. They are non-porous and can therefore be disinfected well. An ultrasonic cleaner is ideal for this: this device works with vibrations and removes even microscopically small residues. For extra certainty, for stainless steel toys that are used internally (such as sounds), you can then use a steriliser, so that you know for sure that no bacteria remain. Silicone toys are a bit softer, but can also be cleaned perfectly well. Always use a mild soap and rinse thoroughly; you can then boil them for 5 minutes. A condom over internal (stainless steel) toys is an extra layer of safety: after use you throw the condom away and still clean the toy using the methods described above. That way you know for sure that you are working with clean equipment.

Practical tips for working hygienically

Hygiene is not only about cleaning your toys, but also about how you use them. Make sure you wash your hands and keep your nails clean before every session. Use latex or nitrile gloves when you are doing internal play. Store your toys in a dry place, preferably in separate bags or boxes so that materials do not damage each other. Think about surfaces too: clean tables, chairs and sofas afterwards with a disinfectant. And don't forget to keep your own mindset hygienic as well. With a messy, dirty play space you do not radiate care and control. It is precisely that thoroughness that makes a sub feel safe enough to let go, but it is also good to realise for yourself that you are playing with someone's health.

FAQ

How often should you clean ropes?

That depends on how often, and for whom, you use them. With intensive use, washing once a month is advisable. If you use them occasionally, once a quarter is enough, provided you store them dry and clean in between. If you use them on different people, it is better to wash them after every use.

Can you clean leather with water?

No, you must never submerge leather. It dries out and loses strength. Use a disinfectant wipe or Meliseptol® and then treat it with leather grease.

How do you make stainless steel toys truly sterile?

You can clean stainless steel in an ultrasonic device and then place it in a steriliser. That way you can be sure that all bacteria have been removed.

Is a condom always necessary with internal toys?

It is not compulsory, but strongly recommended. A condom forms an extra barrier and makes cleaning up afterwards easier.

What is the best way to store toys?

Store toys dry, clean and separate from each other. Use bags or boxes so that materials such as silicone and leather do not damage each other.
