Furnishing your dungeon or playroom. What do you need?

For many BDSM enthusiasts, the ultimate dream is of course having your own dungeon or playroom. In the past you had to rent an expensive SM studio, but these days more and more people choose to set up a space in their home as a BDSM playroom. But what do you actually need for a playroom? Which items really must not be missing? Well, to be honest, you decide that entirely yourself. No two BDSM'ers are the same and everyone has their own preferences. Still, I have a few handy and/or inspiring tips for you.

Atmosphere
It is extremely important to give your playroom the right atmosphere. That means the atmosphere that suits you (and your partner). It can be in the traditional colours red and black, but in fact all colours are possible. From classic green to kinky glossy black. Above all, choose the colours that make you happy and that you feel fit your experience.
Mind the space
Of course you can want all sorts of things, such as a bondage bench and a sling and a pillory and a St Andrew's cross and and and... but you are of course limited by the space. And to be honest, a crammed playroom is not a pleasant playroom. So choose your larger pieces consciously, so that some "room to move" remains. If you are an enthusiastic whip lover, you really need space for that. It would be a shame if a cage or scaffold got in the way.
If you want to use an existing room, such as the bedroom or living room, as a playroom, use furniture on wheels or furniture with multiple functions, so that everything can look well-behaved and innocent again in no time. You have to get a bit creative with that. In several households, for example, I have seen cupboards with a double back panel in which whips were stored. Nobody sees it, and it is instantly accessible for use.
All-time favourites
Of course you have your own preferences and requirements, but there are a few items that really shouldn't be missing, the so-called evergreens. Such as:
St Andrew's cross (possibly a detachable one)
ropes and/or chains
cage or bench
bondage or spanking bench
Lighting
Also think about the lighting. These days you can do so many fun things with LED lighting. For some experiences bright white light is desirable (such as with medical play, where you often need to see clearly what you are doing), but for other experiences mood lighting is perfect. Also experiment with colours and blacklight. Every colour has its own atmosphere. There are also standing LED strip lights that can show different colours (controlled with your phone or a remote control). Lighting can really set the mood, but unfortunately it is often the neglected child.
Safety
Also keep an eye on safety. If you love wax play or cellpopping, for example, it is not very handy to have flammable materials standing or hanging close to your "workplace". Do you want a winch in the playroom? Fine, but do first read up on the maximum load (both stationary and in motion, because there is a big difference).
Make sure all furniture is safe, sturdy and reliable, and inspect it regularly for wear to prevent accidents. Also make sure you have safety tools (such as scissors or cutting tools) within reach, so you can grab them quickly if needed, and also a well-stocked first aid kit. You never know; better safe than sorry.
Make sure the room is locked to anyone who has no business being there.
Soundproofing
I assume you don't want your neighbours to enjoy your exciting moments along with you. In that case, think about good soundproofing. Nowadays there are some beautiful acoustic panels. Perfect for the playroom!
