Using the dog crate

No money for a custom-made cage? No problem, there are cheaper alternatives. A dog crate, for example. "But that's for pets, isn't it?" What's good enough for your dog is surely good enough for your sub. A towel or blanket on the cold floor and he has a perfectly decent home. And a dog crate is multifunctional... because it also fits perfectly into puppy play or pet play.

The dog crate
A decent dog crate can work perfectly well for locking up your sub! Dog out, sub in! Tidy and out of the way. Of course, don't forget to close the cage properly with a padlock. It's obviously not the intention that your pup or sub can free himself. And it's also nicer if you don't buy the smallest one; that might save you a few tens of euros, but it means cramming him in. That generally doesn't do anyone any good.
The dog crate is a cheap and affordable alternative to the special cages. You can get a decent crate for around 150 euros. A special BDSM cage costs you around 700 euros on average.
Dog crate and safety
If you use a padlock on the crate, make sure there is a simple and quick way to get out. Keep the keys within reach, for example. Another option is to close the crate with cable ties. If you keep a pair of scissors to hand, the cage can - if necessary - be opened in no time.
Something else you need to take into account is the size of the crate. Even if you buy the largest cage, the chance is small that your sub can sit in it with his legs stretched out. A dog crate is made for dogs, after all, not for people. This means he sits (somewhat) folded up. That does no harm for a while, but make sure he doesn't stay in one position for too long, given the risk of thrombosis.
Always provide a warm surface. Of course your sub may suffer and endure, but sitting on cold metal for a long time can cause him to become hypothermic. And that is a serious risk to his health. So put a warm blanket on the metal floor. You would probably do that for your dog too, wouldn't you?
