Isn't pet play just the same as puppy play or doggy play? Why all those different names? What does and doesn't fall under it? Well, sometimes with all those terms you lose track a little...

What is pet play?
Pet play is a form of role play within BDSM in which one or more participants take on the role of an animal. Think of dogs, cats, ponies, rabbits or even fantasy creatures. The other party often takes on the role of owner, trainer or caretaker. It is about imitating animal behaviour, letting go of human inhibitions and exploring a different state of being. That makes it a little different from puppy play, which is always about the role of a puppy. Pet play is therefore broader; more is possible than just the role of a dog.
Important to emphasise: pet play has nothing to do with real animals. It is a game between adults, in which fantasy and experience take centre stage. It can be either sexual or non-sexual, depending on the agreements and wishes of those involved.
The difference between pet play and puppy play
Actually, I already wrote it above. Although puppy play is a form of pet play, there are nuances. Puppy play focuses specifically on taking on the role of a dog or puppy. The behaviour is often playful, loyal and energetic. Pups can play alone, with a handler or in a 'pack' with other pups. It is about experiencing a 'puppy headspace', in which human worries disappear for a while.
Pet play is broader and includes multiple animal roles. A kitten, for example, can be naughty and independent, or want to sit purring on your lap, while a pony focuses on discipline and training. Every animal role brings its own dynamic and experience with it.
The deeper layers of pet play
At first glance, pet play may seem like a game. But for many participants it goes deeper. Taking on an animal role can help to let go of stress, process trauma or simply escape everyday reality. It offers a safe space to express emotions, explore boundaries and experience yourself in a different way.
For some it is a form of meditation; a way of being in the moment. For others it is a way of letting go of control and surrendering completely to someone else.
What you need for pet play
Although in essence all you need for pet play is your imagination, there are various items that can enhance the experience:
Collar and lead
Mask
Ears and tail
Paws or gloves
Knee pads
Toys (food bowl, little ball, et cetera)
Pet play as expression and community
Pet play is not only an individual experience; it also has a social component. There are communities, events and gatherings where pet players come together to share experiences, play and learn. Who knows, there may be something near you too!
