Which gag or mouth gag do you prefer?
“Which gag or mouth gag do you prefer?” was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.
It can sometimes be useful to silence your sub. Of course, you can do this by covering their mouth with your hand, but that will give you a numb arm; you could stuff a dirty sock or worn underwear in there, but you could also opt for a gag. But do you have any idea how many different types of gags there are? It’s hard to see the forest for the trees. That’s why I’m writing a blog post about all these different options. And after reading this, I’d love to hear which gag you prefer (and why).

The Experience of the Gag
Of course, the most important function of the gag is to muffle the sub’s sounds, because some of them would scream loud enough to wake up the whole neighborhood if given the chance. You don’t want that. Using a gag can significantly reduce the noise level. It’s also easier on your ears. But a gag does more than that. It can be part of an elaborate bondage setup, but it also underscores submission and has a humiliating aspect to it. You’re sending a clear message.
“What comes out of your mouth isn’t important anyway.” And what about all that drool… You’d better hang a drip tray underneath. Those long strands aren’t just gross, they’re humiliating too! A gag can also serve a special purpose in role-play. Think of the dentist’s chair, the bit during pony play, or a bone during puppy play. So a gag is much more than just a button to lower the noise level.
Gag or mouth gag
There is no difference between these two; the mouth gag is simply the Dutch term for a gag. It is an accessory that prevents the sub from speaking or screaming. It was already used in ancient times so that the executioner wouldn’t be bothered by the screaming (and neither would the neighbors). These days, we no longer have executioners, and it’s just a favorite toy within BDSM. I get that. Some people scream like skinny pigs.
Of course, you don’t have to buy a specific gag to silence someone if you’re watching your budget. A handkerchief tied around the mouth works just fine. Incidentally, this method is called an OTM gag (Over The Mouth gag). And that brings us right to the different types of mouth gags.
Over The Mouth
A handkerchief or cloth tied around the mouth.
Cleave gag
A variation on the OTM gag, but this one goes not over, but into the mouth.
Knotted gag
This is a cross between the cleave and the ball gag. A knot is tied in the cleave gag, and this knot is placed in the mouth. The knotted gag has two advantages over the ball gag: the knot absorbs saliva, and the gag can be easily washed for reuse. Knots can be doubled or tripled to adjust the gag to the size of the mouth.
Stuffed gag
This works in the same way as the ball gag. A piece of fabric (handkerchief, string, sock, pantyhose, etc.) is rolled up and stuffed into the mouth. You don’t want your sub to choke, so be careful how deep you stuff it into the mouth. It should never be pushed all the way in. The majority of it should hang out of the mouth so that you can remove it immediately in case of an emergency.
Adhesive tape or duct tape
A roll of duct tape or PVC tape is always handy. Easy to use by applying a strip from ear to ear. Be careful with the hair, so it doesn’t turn into a hair removal treatment afterward. It can also damage the lips, so please use this form of gagging with caution.
Ball gag
Usually made of rubber or silicone, but sometimes also in metal or wood. It is shaped like a ball, attached to a strap that goes around the head. They are available in various sizes, with and without holes (holes make breathing easier), and made from different materials. Always start with a smaller ball gag and build up the experience. Place the ball in the mouth, behind the teeth, and secure the strap tightly behind the head. High likelihood of drooling.
Ring gag
This gag has a ring (instead of a ball), usually made of rubber, steel, or silicone. If the ring is large enough, oral sex is possible. Drooling is guaranteed.
Mouth spreader
The mouth spreader is made of steel and the width is often adjustable. It allows you to open the mouth wider than with the ring gag. Some spreaders are coated with a layer of rubber, which is gentler on the teeth. Another name for the mouth spreader is the “Jennings gag” or jaw clamp. It is often used by dentists and oral surgeons to hold the jaws open. This makes it perfectly suited for “dentist play”… and can therefore serve well as part of nursing roleplay. Guaranteed drooling.
Mouth Bit
This resembles a horse bit and is therefore perfect for pony play, to further enhance the experience. Available in various materials: metal, rubber, silicone. It does not so much prevent speech and/or sound. This bit truly serves a different purpose.
Penis gag, pecker gag
Also known as a pecker gag. The “penis” is placed in the mouth. It can be wide and flat, designed to push the tongue downward.
Inflatable gag
A rubber or silicone balloon that can be inflated with a hand pump. It functions like a sturdy balloon. Inflate it gently to the desired size. Please use caution.
Muzzle gag
Often made of leather. They are secured around the head with buckles and straps. Often features an additional plate covering the mouth, cheeks, and chin.
Funnel gag
Here, a funnel is attached to the gag, which is held in place with straps. This gag can be used to force the wearer to drink a liquid. Make sure to use it with care so the sub doesn’t choke. They must be given the chance to swallow comfortably.
Dildo gag
A gag with a dildo on the outside; often there is a ball on the inside that can be placed in the mouth. A wonderful form of humiliation when he has to penetrate the other person with his head.

Safety
You can often use a gag, except… if someone has an irritated nose (flu, asthma, allergies, a cold) and can barely breathe through their nose. In that case, the gag is not an option. Not at all. So always check before applying the gag to make sure the sub can breathe properly through their nose. Also ensure that the nose is clear and not blocked, for example, by foil bondage or something similar.
Do not gag someone who is lying with their head tilted back. Saliva can run down the wrong way.
Another risk is choking or vomiting. If the vomit cannot escape through the mouth, it can also block the airways. Therefore, never leave someone wearing a gag alone. Do you use a safe word? If so, come up with an alternative while wearing a gag, such as a gesture.
Always clean the gag afterward with warm water and soap or a good toy cleaner.
