“Ever heard of figging? Here's the spicy explanation!“ was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.

Perhaps you have come across the term figging before, or perhaps you have experienced it yourself without knowing there was a term for it. Figging comes from the German word "fegen" and means getting sexual pleasure from a peeled fresh ginger root. Between the 18th and 20th centuries, horse dealers used peeled ginger root to make their horses look livelier. They put a piece of ginger root into the backside of an old, weak horse so that it would hold its tail and head up and lift its legs high while trotting through the field. That way they suddenly seemed a lot more energetic. This practice was (rightly) regarded as a form of fraud and was eventually banned.

Ever heard of figging? Here's the spicy explanation!

From corporal punishment to pleasure...

The origin of figging goes back to ancient Greece, where a similar practice, known as rhaphanidosis, was used as a punishment. Slaves who misbehaved had a radish or ginger root inserted into their anus as a form of disciplinary measure. They used this method to correct disobedience and discourage unwanted behaviour. Nowadays it is a sexual challenge within BDSM...

What is figging?

In figging, a peeled piece of ginger root is inserted into the anus or vagina. This causes an intense, burning sensation that builds up over time and lasts for a few minutes before fading quickly. You can shape the ginger into something resembling a butt plug to make insertion easier. Interestingly, clenching the anal muscles intensifies the sensation, which adds an extra dimension to the experience.

How does it work?

The ginger root is carved into the shape of a butt plug (phallic shape). The fresh (wet) ginger root gives a burning feeling in the anus or vagina. This produces an intense sensation for about five to ten minutes, and then it slowly subsides. After about half an hour the pain is greatly reduced or even no longer noticeable. After use, the ginger can be peeled further and used to prolong the experience, or fresh ginger can be used; each application of ginger root renews the duration of the sensations.

The burning feeling the ginger causes can serve as a form of sensual stimulation or as a punishment in a dominant/submissive dynamic. Knowing that clenching the muscles intensifies the sensation can add a playful element, where the receiver is encouraged to relax, even in challenging circumstances.

You can of course also rub the peeled ginger root over the clitoris for a stimulating effect.

Is figging safe?

Ginger is a natural substance, but it can cause allergic reactions in some people. That is why it is important to test for allergies beforehand. In addition, the ginger must be peeled and shaped thoroughly to avoid sharp edges that could damage the delicate tissue.

Hygiene is essential; make sure the ginger is clean and that everyone involved has washed their hands.

The next time you see a ginger root in the supermarket, you will probably think of its dual functionality with a smile. Who said grocery shopping is boring?
