Wearing a butt plug (also called an anal plug) can be part of BDSM, for example during anal play, but of course you don't have to be into BDSM to enjoy a nice butt plug. It can just as easily be part of kinky sex. But whether you're a fan or someone who would like to try it once, it's useful to choose the right butt plug, so an anal plug that suits you. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and are made from various materials. Think of silicone, glass, stainless steel, PU leather, plastic, PVC, jelly or rubber. But how do you know which butt plug is the right one for you?

What is a butt plug?
I can hardly imagine that you don't know what it is, but for the newbies, here is a short description. A butt plug is a kind of "stopper" for your anus. It has a special shape, which makes it really different from a dildo. A butt plug is mainly designed to stay in place. With a dildo, that's a different story.
The experience of a butt plug is mostly about the feeling of being "filled". You can (if it fits well) wear it for quite a long time. The sphincter clamps around the neck of the plug, so it stays nicely in place. Do make sure the butt plug has a flared base, so that it cannot disappear completely into the anus. If the plug doesn't have this, you had better not use it. In that case, the chance that you can't get it out yourself is quite high.
Multiple functions
As I said, the experience lies mainly in the "filled feeling", but there are also beautiful butt plugs for sale that are used as jewellery. For example, plugs with crystals, lighting or special shapes.
Is the full feeling not full enough yet? Then choose an inflatable butt plug. Do think ahead with this one, and I certainly wouldn't start with it straight away.
Need extra stimulation? Then choose a vibrating butt plug. Good for stimulating your sphincter muscles, a pleasant experience or for an extra feeling of relaxation.
Butt plugs can also be used very well in various forms of play such as puppy play or pony play. In that case the plugs come with gorgeous full, fluffy tails!
Mad about electro? There are also butt plugs for sale that you can connect to your E-stim device. Then two worlds come together in an exciting way!
With a butt plug you can also train to take a penis, a dildo or a vibrator at a later stage.
The right butt plug for the beginner
Butt plugs are perfectly suited to anal stimulation and you don't need anyone else for it. You can experience it entirely on your own (although it's of course always more fun to play with it together).
If you have no experience yet, you had better start as small and smooth as possible. Choose, for example, a plug of 8cm at most. There are also handy beginners' sets for sale, which usually consist of three sizes of butt plug. That way you can train yourself calmly and go a step further each time. Choose silicone, because it is the softest, so you run less risk of hurting yourself when inserting the plug. As you become more skilled, you can choose a butt plug with texture, a larger shape or ones made from harder materials.
Safety
Choose body-safe materials, such as silicone, glass or stainless steel, and preferably not the jelly versions, as these contain a lot of plasticisers, which are not good for your health (carcinogenic). Do you still want to try it, or are you crazy about this feeling? Fine, but then put a condom over it, so that your skin doesn't come into direct contact with the jelly.
Also make sure you preferably don't use a plug made of porous material. This material cannot be cleaned properly, so bacteria and fungi can harm your health. In this case too, use a condom, to be as hygienic as possible.
Plugs made of silicone, glass and stainless steel are easy to clean. The last of these, however, are hard materials, which makes them a little less suitable for the beginner plugger.
Pay close attention to whether the butt plug has a base with a flared design (widening out), to prevent it from slipping further (or even too far) into your anus by accident.
Cleaning the butt plug
Butt plugs made of silicone, glass and stainless steel are easy to clean. You can wash them well with soap, even put them in the dishwasher, and afterwards clean them with a good toy cleaner. Make sure you always do this afterwards, so that everything is clean and ready for next time. Because let's be honest, when you're horny and want to use that butt plug, you really don't feel like cleaning that thing first.
Incidentally, it's also advisable to clean the plug beforehand with some warm water and soap. Especially if you haven't kept it in a storage bag.
If you share the butt plug with others, such as your partner, always put a condom over it to be safe.
Lubricant
Of course, don't forget to coat your anus or butt plug beforehand with plenty of lubricant. With the silicone version, always use a water-based lubricant. Relax and keep breathing calmly, let the plug slide in slowly and don't force anything. If you are too tense, it's better to first do something to make yourself more relaxed.
How long can you wear a butt plug?
That depends largely on your experience. If you're just starting out, don't wear it for too long. You can slowly build up the time, depending on how it feels for you. Once your bum is used to it, you can slowly increase the intensity and duration. Always keep listening carefully to your body, by the way. If it feels uncomfortable, or even becomes painful, take the plug out straight away.
Butt plugs are meant for temporary stimulation and/or as preparation for anal play (such as pegging). So the idea is not to keep it in for 24 hours. If you do want to wear it for several hours, don't forget to add some lubricant in between to prevent excessive friction.
What else can you do with a plug in your bum?
In principle you can simply carry on doing everything. So walking, running and sitting, although one plug is better suited than another. You'll notice that while sitting, the plug gets pushed slightly deeper into the anus.
