“What on earth is an anal hook?“ was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.

When I look around my "A-room" (where the A stands for "Anal"), I can see several anal hooks hanging there at a glance. Ascending from small balls to big balls. With an anal hook you bring together the best of two worlds: Anal play & Bondage. But perhaps you haven't come across this special "butt plug" before, so let me introduce it to you.

What on earth is an anal hook?

What is an anal hook?

Imagine a metal hook with a ball (or another shape) at one end and an eye or ring at the other. The hook itself is shaped like a question mark. That is the anal hook in a nutshell. Designed for anal stimulation and often used in bondage play, this toy offers a unique combination of sensations and control. The eye or ring can, for example, be attached to ropes or other bondage gear, so that the receiver's movements can be restricted or guided. It may sound like a medieval instrument of torture, but for many people it is an exciting addition to their repertoire.

What can you use an anal hook for?

The anal hook is more versatile than you might think. First of all, it is used for anal stimulation, which can bring intense pleasure for some people. But the real magic happens when you combine it with bondage. By connecting the hook to ropes, harnesses or even a collar, you create a dynamic in which every movement can be felt. It can evoke a feeling of surrender and control that is both exciting and challenging.

Is it always made of stainless steel?

The hooks are usually around 2.5 cm thick (the ball varies in size and shape) and around 15 cm long.

Stainless steel is the most common material for anal hooks, and not without reason. It is durable, easy to clean and has a smooth surface that makes insertion easier. On top of that, the weight of the metal adds an extra dimension to the experience. And let's be honest, the shiny metal simply looks tough too.

Stainless steel has another nice bonus: it is perfectly suited to temperature play! It very easily takes on the temperature of a cold or warm water bath beforehand. Always check the temperature on the inside of your forearm first, so that the hook is not too cold or too hot before you insert it.

How do you use the anal hook?

Actually, it's very simple. Choose the right size and coat it well with a body-safe lubricant. Then slowly let the hook (ball first) glide into the anus. With the eye (at the end of the hook) proudly pointing upwards, of course. You can attach a bondage rope to this eye, but of course also chains, a leash (fun for making him crawl around) or other bondage material.

Anal not really your thing? You can of course also use it vaginally... then you simply start the bondage at the front.

Choose a gentle build-up

Build up the play slowly and above all take your time. Always use plenty of lubricant and start with a small ball if someone doesn't have much (anal) experience yet. How deep the ball goes into the anus is a personal preference. One person likes to feel it deep, another prefers a bit more play.

Want to make it extra exciting? Then hold a (wand) vibrator against it...

The right precautions

An anal hook can be used safely, provided you take the right precautions. Make sure you use enough lubricant to make insertion comfortable. Preferably choose a water-based lubricant, as it is compatible with most materials and easy to clean. The downside of this lubricant, however, is that it dries out faster. Keep this in mind.

Start slowly and listen to your body (or that of your partner). If something doesn't feel right, stop immediately. It's not a competition; it's about pleasure and comfort.

Can you damage anything with it?

The anal area is sensitive and vulnerable. Careless or overly enthusiastic use of an anal hook can lead to tears, bruising or other injuries. That is why it is important to always be careful. Never use force and don't force anything.

Clean the hook thoroughly before and after each use to prevent infections. You can do this by washing it with water and a mild disinfectant soap and/or a good toy cleaner.

Buying an anal hook: what should you look out for?

Most anal hooks are made of stainless steel, and that is perfectly fine. The material is strong, perfectly suited to temperature play, smooth and easy to clean. Preferably don't go for cheaper alternatives such as anal hooks made of chrome-plated materials, nickel or plastic. If you spend a bit more straight away on a good stainless steel anal hook, you can enjoy it for a very long time.

Watch the ball!

Never insert the anal hook without a ball. Sometimes you can unscrew it. However, the sharp end can damage the delicate tissue. So only insert the hook with a ball of your choice, and make sure it is screwed on properly. Even safer is to choose an anal hook where the ball is permanently attached to the hook. That way you can be sure you can't accidentally leave it behind in the anus because it wasn't screwed on properly.

Safety

Safety of course starts with yourself. Pay attention to what you're doing and keep your head in the game. Don't force anything; if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Better luck next time. As with any form of bondage, make sure you have (bandage) scissors or a knife within reach, so that in an emergency you can cut the rope loose.

Even better is to attach a carabiner to the anal hook and start the bondage from there. If anything is wrong, you can easily and quickly undo the carabiner and remove the anal hook.

Never suspend someone from an anal hook! An anal hook is NOT suitable for suspension. If you do like to let the sub hang in their bondage, make sure that no weight ends up hanging from the hook.

Personally, I always put a condom on the hook first. That doesn't spare me the cleaning, but I like the idea of working as hygienically as possible. Especially because I play with several subs, I find this reassuring.
