What is a speculum?
“What is a speculum or duckbill?” was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.
For many women who have ever visited a gynecologist or had an internal examination by a general practitioner, this is a familiar device. The speculum, duckbill, or scoop, is an instrument used primarily by gynecologists in the medical world for internal examinations. In shape, it resembles a duck’s bill: long, flat, and equipped with a mechanism to open and close. This design makes it possible to gently open the interior of body cavities, such as the vagina, and make them visible for examination.

The Origins
The origins of the speculum date back to ancient times. It is fascinating to see how this instrument has evolved over the centuries. The earliest versions were made of materials such as wood or metal. Over the years, the design has been refined, with a focus on patient comfort and safety.
The speculum in BDSM
In many cases, the dominant is of course not a doctor or gynecologist, yet the speculum regularly appears in BDSM, for example in nursing or medical play. In certain role-playing scenarios, it’s naturally incredibly exciting to examine specific body cavities. Not only vaginally, but anally as well. This involves the combination of helplessness and being observed. There’s something humiliating about it, yet at the same time, it can be arousing.
To make the session even more exciting, you can tie up the sub and put a blindfold on them so that what’s going to happen is one big surprise. You could surprise the sub out of the blue with a vibrator or dilator.
How do you use the speculum?
Before inserting the speculum, it’s important that the sub or slave feels comfortable. Before inserting the speculum, first check that it’s in good condition. Disinfect the speculum beforehand, before using it. Once everything is ready for use, lubricate it with lubricant so it can slide in more easily. Hold the speculum by the handles and gently insert the closed blades into the vagina or anus. Once it is safely inserted, carefully open the blades. This spreads the vaginal walls so the “patient” can be examined.
Keep a close eye on the sub and anticipate their reaction. Stop if it is or becomes uncomfortable; after all, you don’t want to cause any harm.
Once you’ve had a good look inside, close the blades and gently and carefully remove it. Don’t forget to thoroughly clean the speculum afterward. You can do this by boiling the speculum (if it’s stainless steel) or using a good toy cleaner.
Different models
There are various models available. A different type for every play scenario:
These are often more affordable and made of plastic. This allows you to get acquainted with them in an accessible way.
The speculum for anal use has narrower blades compared to the one for vaginal use.
This is the most well-known type, made of stainless steel (or plastic, whichever you prefer).
And if you want to make it truly spectacular? There are even vibrating duckbills available!
