Ahead of the very first Sissy Celebration Day on Sunday 3 August, we're devoting extra attention over the coming days to the world of sissies and sissification. Because although terms like transvestism, crossdressing and being a sissy are sometimes used interchangeably, completely different experiences lie behind them. Although at first glance "transvestism" and "sissification" seem similar, they represent different concepts within the BDSM scene. But what exactly are the differences?

Transvestism: the art of dressing as the other gender
Transvestism, also known as crossdressing, refers to wearing clothing traditionally associated with the other gender. This is centuries old and occurs in many different cultures. People who practise transvestism, also called transvestites, may do so for a wide range of reasons: from artistic expression to personal fulfilment.
It is important to note that transvestism is not necessarily connected to someone's sexual orientation or gender identity. Many transvestites still identify with the gender they were born with and feel no need to change gender. For some it is a way of expressing another side of themselves, while for others it is a form of escapism or pleasure.
Sissification
The term 'sissy' has a specific meaning within BDSM. It refers to a man who enjoys taking on a feminine role, often combined with submission. This practice, known as 'sissification' or 'sissy training', can include elements such as wearing women's clothing, adopting feminine mannerisms and carrying out household tasks that are traditionally regarded as feminine.
Sissification is often part of a power dynamic, in which the 'sissy' takes on a submissive role towards a dominant partner. It can also include elements of humiliation, depending on the agreements that have been made.
The key differences between a sissy and a transvestite
Although both sissification and transvestism involve aspects of gender expression, there are clear differences between the two.
Firstly, the motivation behind the practice is different. Transvestites dress in clothing of the other gender for personal reasons that can range from self-expression to comfort. This practice is often separate from any sexual context and is not necessarily linked to submission or a power dynamic.
Sissification, on the other hand, is often linked to submission and feminisation within a sexual or kink context. The feminisation is not just a matter of clothing, but also of behaviour and role within a power dynamic.
In addition, the context in which these practices take place is different. Transvestism can be practised both in public and in private and is often an individual expression. Sissification usually takes place within a BDSM relationship or session and is often private because of its intimate and personal nature.
