You really don't need a fully equipped dungeon to hurt someone. Even with just your hands, your feet, your knees and your teeth, you can get a long way. Just as with your hands and feet, you can cause various degrees of pain with your teeth too. Ranging from soft nibbling to nasty, hard biting! You decide for yourself how far you go with it. Variety is of course even more fun. Soft nibbles with a nasty nip here and there, a bit of scraping with those teeth in between, or just a gentle caress of your lips and suddenly *chomp*.

Biting can be part of primal play, but it actually fits into a great many different forms of play. And as long as you don't keep your dentures on the bedside table, you always have them with you. I don't know about you, but I love biting. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved sinking my teeth into (living) human flesh. It brings out a kind of primal urge in me. I find it hard to describe.

The risks of biting

Very gently nibbling on someone's earlobe can't do any harm, of course. It's only nice, pleasant and for some people even arousing. Not for everyone, mind you, because some people shudder at all that slobbering at the ear. But setting that aside, what if you give someone a firm nip? The kind where your teeth sink deep into the skin? Then it's good to know that a human bite is not without risk. Our mouth is a moist breeding ground for a large number of bacteria. On average we have around 700 different types of bacteria in our mouths. Some of them are harmless and even help with digestion, while others can be quite aggressive.

The most common culprits are Streptococcus, Staphylococcus and Eikenella corrodens (okay, you can forget these names right away, but it sounds so deliciously smug). These bacteria can behave just as nastily as they sound – mean and dangerous. If they get into your skin through a bite, they can cause serious infections. That's why it's always important to take a human bite seriously and not dismiss it as a silly little accident. (How can you bite someone by accident??)

Dangerous human bites

Depending on its depth and location, a human bite can range from a minor inconvenience to a serious medical problem. Besides bacteria, the human mouth also has sharp teeth that can do considerable damage. Deep bites can damage muscles, tendons and even bones.

In fact, after dog and cat bites, human bites are the most common bites requiring medical treatment. This is mainly due to the unique combination of physical damage and bacterial infection. A bite on your hand, for example, can be particularly problematic because of the many tendons and joints that lie close beneath the skin.

And a gentle bite?

Of course, the chance of a serious infection from a gentle bite is much smaller than from a deep one, but the risk is not zero. It's always a good idea to clean the bite and keep an eye out for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling or pus. So even if you lovingly bite someone on the arm or neck, it's important to keep a close eye on the spot. If the skin is broken, there is always a chance of infection.

What should you do with a serious human bite?

First of all, clean the wound thoroughly with soap and water. This helps reduce the number of bacteria on the skin. Then it's wise to apply an antiseptic (a disinfectant such as alcohol). If the bite is deep or the skin is badly damaged, seek medical help.

Doctors will often prescribe a course of antibiotics to prevent an infection from developing. In some cases, getting a tetanus jab may even be advised. Just like with a street wound.

Risks & BDSM

BDSM is never without risk, as you can see here once again. That's why it's always important to keep your head in the game and know what you're doing.
