Coprophilia or Brown Showers: Know the Risks

Coprophilia (often shortened to Copro), brown shower, chocolate shower, caviar: they are all expressions for poo sex. Some people get erotically aroused by this. Coprophilia comes from the Greek: Copros = dung and Lagneia = lust. I can hardly imagine it, because for me playing with poo, in whatever form, is an absolute no-go. I feel sick at the very thought. If you find it incredibly exciting, be my guest. I have no judgement about it, but please not anywhere near me.

However, playing with poo is not without danger. You may already have read something about it in the blog Dangerous or even impossible fantasies, but in this blog I will go into it in a bit more depth. Playing with poo happens quite regularly, relatively speaking, and I wonder whether the possible risks are known in all cases.
Coprophilia, a sexual fascination with excrement
Let's not beat about the bush: human sexuality can sometimes take surprising forms, and for some people perhaps even incomprehensible ones. One of those surprising preferences is coprophilia, a sexual fascination with excrement. There are people who find pleasure in what others would flush away immediately. It may sound bizarre, but as with any sexual preference, there is more going on than you might think at first glance. What drives someone to it? And more importantly: what are the risks? Because yes, playing with poo is not exactly without consequences.
What is coprophilia, actually?
Coprophilia is a specific paraphilia in which people become sexually aroused by excrement. This can range from looking at, touching or smelling excrement to even eating it (a practice called coprophagia). Although this is a taboo subject, it is more common than you would think, though it remains largely hidden because of the shame that goes with it.
Sexuality is complex and shaped by countless factors, ranging from culture to personal experiences. What is a turn-off for one person can be a source of arousal for another. It is important to remember that people with this preference, like everyone else, have their own limits and desires. But before you think: "live and let live," it is important to look at the risks too. Because a moment of arousal should of course not undermine your health.
The harsh reality
We can't get around it: poo is full of bacteria. And no, these are not the friendly gut bacteria you find in your probiotics. We are talking about E. coli, Salmonella and other nasty pathogens that can make you seriously ill. The excrement that leaves your body contains waste products and bacteria that you would rather keep as far away from you as possible. Your body doesn't get rid of them for nothing.
Eating excrement can lead to a range of health problems, from diarrhoea to severe food poisoning. Your body works hard to get rid of harmful substances and bacteria, and by taking them back in through coprophagia, you can expose yourself to all kinds of infections and illnesses. A few common risks are:
Bacterial infections
E. coli, Salmonella and Shigella are just a few examples of bacteria that can lead to symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.Parasites
The possibility of picking up parasites through faeces is real. Think of worm infections, for example. Those parasites see your intestines as a five-star hotel.Viral infections
Some viruses, such as Hepatitis A, can be transmitted through excrement. Also not something you would like on your wish list.Fungi and yeasts
In addition, faeces can also contain fungi and yeasts, which in turn cause other problems. Candida infections, for example. Here too: prevention is better than cure.
But what if you only touch it?
Perhaps you are thinking: "Okay, eating poo doesn't sound like a good idea, but what if you only touch it?" Touching excrement carries fewer risks than consuming it, but it is certainly not without danger. Just as washing your hands after a visit to the toilet is important, the same applies when you voluntarily come into contact with it.
Bacteria and viruses can easily enter your body via your hands, especially if you then bring your hands near your mouth, nose or eyes. Moreover, there may be small wounds or cracks in the skin that you can't even see yourself, but which can form an entry point for bacteria. They are, after all, not that big.
Hygiene
If, despite everything, you still feel drawn to coprophilia, it is in any case important to take as many precautions as possible. Think of gloves, disinfectants and avoiding direct exposure to mucous membranes. It may sound like overkill (and certainly not sexy or arousing), but when it comes to preventing infections, you're better off playing it safe.
Why would people want this?
Why would someone get aroused by poo? As with many fetishes and paraphilias, the answer may lie in psychological, emotional or even social factors. For some it may be the thrill of something "forbidden". Others experience arousal through control, power or breaking social norms. There may also be a link with a deeper underlying dynamic, such as surrender or humiliation.
It is important to understand that sexual preferences are enormously diverse and that what seems incomprehensible to one person can be a source of deep satisfaction for another. That does not mean, however, that it is without risk.
Is it worth it?
Coprophilia is certainly not for everyone, and it is important to know that the risks can be considerable, especially when it comes to eating excrement. The body has its ways of removing waste products, and taking those substances back in is another matter entirely. However tempting it may be for some, it is usually not a good idea.
If you do feel drawn to this paraphilia, it is wise to be well informed and to take strict hygiene measures. And let's be honest: an adventurous or exciting mind is one thing, but a stomach full of bacteria is probably not the experience you are hoping for.
