Leather: From care to leather fetish!
“Leather: From Care to Leather Fetish!” was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.
Many materials, pieces of furniture, and clothing used in BDSM are made of (or incorporate) leather. Think, for example, of whips, masks, restraints, clothing, but also items like a St. Andrew’s cross or a bondage table. The material exudes a certain ruggedness, but it is also very durable, of course, because it is sturdy enough to last a long time. Leather products often come with hefty price tags, so you’ll want to take good care of them. That means, among other things: proper maintenance!

This is how to make your leather last the longest!
Cleaning
Start by regularly dusting your leather furniture with a soft, dry cloth to remove surface dirt and dust. For a deeper clean, use a special leather cleaning product. Test the cleaner first on an inconspicuous spot to make sure it doesn’t cause any damage. Apply the cleaner to a soft cloth – not directly to the leather – and gently rub it in. You can also clean your leather whips with this product.
Conditioning
After cleaning, it’s important to keep the leather supple and prevent it from drying out and cracking. Use a leather conditioner (leather grease) and apply it according to the instructions on the packaging. This should be done once every few months, depending on how dry the environment is and how often the item is used. Greasing leather applies to all leather products—whips, furniture, clothing, masks, and so on.
Protection
Protect leather from excessive exposure to sunlight and direct heat sources, which can dry out and discolor the leather. Also avoid exposing leather to sharp objects that can scratch the surface. Be mindful of metal buckles when wearing leather clothing.
Storage
Store leather clothing and play accessories (such as masks) in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use a breathable cover, such as a cotton bag, to cover leather when storing it for an extended period, as plastic bags can trap moisture and promote mold growth.
Stain Removal
If stains appear on the leather, try to treat them as soon as possible. Use a clean, dry cloth to blot up excess moisture. For stubborn stains, it is advisable to consult a professional leather cleaner.
Prevent water and grease stains
Although some types of leather are treated to be water-resistant, it is generally best to avoid contact with water and greasy substances. If leather gets wet, let it dry naturally without using external heat sources.
Leather fetish
Leather fetishism refers to a form of sexual fetishism in which a person experiences a strong sexual attraction to leather and leather objects or garments. This can range from a preference for wearing leather to sexual arousal from touching, smelling, or seeing leather. The sheen, scent, and feel of leather against the skin are aspects that are often appreciated. The sound of leather moving can also be a stimulating factor.
For some, leather symbolizes power, control, or rebellion, which contributes to its appeal. Wearing leather can give someone a sense of confidence, strength, or sexual empowerment.
Leather fetishism has its own community and culture, with events such as leather parties, parades, and gatherings where leather enthusiasts come together. This community can range from local to international events, such as the Leather Pride festivals.
What is the difference between leather and patent leather?
Leather
Leather is a natural material made by tanning animal hides. This process transforms the hide into a durable and flexible material by halting the decomposition process. Leather can come from various animals, such as cows, sheep, goats, and pigs. It has a natural texture and can be treated or dyed to achieve different finishes and colors. Leather is breathable, durable, and becomes more supple with use. It requires regular maintenance to preserve its quality and longevity.
Patent leather
Patent leather is leather that has been coated with a glossy, hard lacquer, giving it a high-gloss finish. The lacquer layer is usually made from a mixture of acrylic and polyurethane plastic applied to the surface of the leather. This gives patent leather its characteristic shine and smooth texture. Patent leather is less breathable than untreated leather and may be more prone to scratches and cracks in the lacquer layer. However, it is easier to clean and maintain than regular leather, as stains can usually be wiped away with a damp cloth.
