The corset shapes your body

“The corset shapes your body” was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.

The corset is a garment designed to shape the body into a specific form, particularly the waist and breasts. The development and use of the corset have undergone significant changes over time, often reflecting broader social, cultural, and fashion-related trends.

Het korset modelleert je lichaam

The use of garments to cinch the waist and support the bust dates back to ancient times, but the corset as we know it today began to take shape in late medieval Europe. During this period, it was primarily used to smooth out outer garments and create a streamlined silhouette.

16th and 17th Centuries

In the 16th century, the corset became an essential part of women’s wardrobes in Europe, especially at court. It was used to cinch the waist and lift the bust, often to the point of discomfort. These corsets were stiff, made of fabrics like linen and reinforced with whalebone or wooden stays.

18th and 19th Centuries

The 18th and 19th centuries saw an evolution in corset design, with the introduction of the so-called “stay,” which placed greater emphasis on supporting the bust and creating an hourglass figure. During the Victorian era, corset-wearing reached its peak, with extreme waist-shaping and the ideal hourglass figure being highly sought after. This period also saw the introduction of metal stays, which offered even more shaping possibilities.

20th Century to the Present

At the beginning of the 20th century, the popularity of the corset began to decline, partly due to the emergence of new fashion ideals and the development of more comfortable undergarments, such as the bra. In the 1960s and 1970s, the corset was rediscovered as a symbol of female power and sexuality, thanks in part to the feminist movement.

The Corset in BDSM

In the wardrobe of most female Dominants, you’ll find at least one corset. It’s essentially lingerie designed to accentuate the female figure even more. It looks incredibly sexy, of course. Within BDSM, you’ll find them in all kinds of materials: rubber, velvet, fabric, lace, latex, vinyl, and leather. Incidentally, the corset is just as often worn by subs and sissies. Especially the styles with D-rings attached. These rings are perfect for bondage or for attaching a chain.

On the one hand, the corset is used to highlight the female form even more (hips, breasts, and a narrow waist); on the other hand, the shape makes the more delicate parts appear even more vulnerable.

Help is needed when putting on a corset

The corset is held tightly together at the back by a long lace. You can therefore never put it on by yourself, as you need someone to lace it up for you. Modern corsets usually also have a front closure, allowing you to put it on and take it off yourself.

How do you lace a corset?

Tying a corset requires some practice and patience:

Thread the laces

Make sure the laces are threaded correctly through the corset (see example). This means that the laces in the top and bottom sections are threaded crosswise, but run straight through the middle once. This creates two long loops in the middle while threading.

Preparation

Loosely place the corset around your body with the closure (busk) at the front. Make sure the lacing cord at the back is loose so you can easily close the corset at the front.

Close the busk

Start at the top and snap each hook into the eyelets.

Tightening

Start at the top of the corset and pull the laces toward the center. Once in the center, hold the laces with one hand. Then work from the bottom toward the center. At the center of the waist, gradually tighten the laces. Once the top and bottom are tight, you’ll have two long loops remaining in the center.

Finishing

Once the corset is evenly laced and fits comfortably, tie the laces (the two long loops) into a bow (or bow-on-bow) at the back and secure them tightly.
