What is sounding?

“What is sounding?” was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.

Ever heard of sounding? Or the use of dilators? Sounding is the insertion of an object into the urethra. That may sound very scary, but for some people it is very exciting. They can even have an orgasm from it. The sounds (dilators) that can be used for this are usually made of surgical steel, but there are also silicone dilators. However, the advantage of surgical steel is that it is easy to sterilize. And good hygiene is an absolute must when playing this game! After all, you don’t want to give someone an infected urethra. Sounding can be part of “Medical play or Nursing.” .

Penis plug

In addition to sounds (which are usually quite long), there are also penis plugs. These are usually somewhat shorter with a ring at the end. This ring can provide additional stimulation to the glans during play. The difference between a sound and a penis plug is mainly in their use. A penis plug is often used as a sex toy for extra stimulation. It can make the penis more sensitive, prolong erections, and intensify orgasms. The dilator (or sound) is longer and is intended to stimulate the urethra. They can slide so deep into the urethra that they can touch the bladder. Be careful with this!

Sounding is an intimate and intense experience in which the entire focus is on the genitals of the sub. Your entire attention and concentration are on that spot. That alone gives a feeling of excitement to the person undergoing it.

Sounding

Sounding means inserting ‘something’ into the urethra. This can be a dilator, but this term is also used for a catheter or probe, for example. Within BDSM, it is used to experience sexual pleasure. It involves the insertion of smooth, thin objects. There are also CBs (chastity belts) that have a special pin that can be inserted into the urethra, which gives the feeling of ultimate surrender to the Dominant.

However, always keep in mind that the tissue of the urethra is sensitive and vulnerable to inflammation.

Different designs

Sounds or dilators come in different designs and sizes. There are straight rods, curved rods, rods combined with vibrations, sounds made of surgical steel or silicone. But whatever they look like, they all work more or less the same way.

Other names

This game and the accessories that can be used for it have various names. It is sometimes referred to as ‘cock stuffing’ (literally: ‘penis filling’). There are also other names for the sounds, such as dilator, dilator plug, or hollow penis plug. However, it is always a product that needs to be inserted into the urethra.

Use

When you start using these for the first time, it is important to know what you are doing and how to do it. First of all, it is important that the sounds (or penis plug) are sterile and have been thoroughly cleaned beforehand. Before use, clean them again with alcohol. Allow the alcohol to evaporate completely before you start. Place the sounds on a clean tissue or in a clean kidney dish.

Once the sounds have ‘evaporated’ properly, take the smallest size. Apply a small amount of (sterile) lubricant to the end so that the rod can easily slide into the urethra. Hold the penis firmly with one hand (do not squeeze) and use your other hand to gently slide the rod into the urethra. Let gravity do the work and do not force anything! Do not stuff, squeeze, or push, but let the rod slide in by itself. If it does not work, simply try again another time.

Gently back and forth

Once the rod has slid down, you can gently move it back and forth. Lift it up a little and then gently lower it again. You can also make very small circles with it to stretch the urethra a little bit for the next sound. But do this very gently! After all, you don’t want to damage the tube.

If everything goes well, remove it after a few minutes and repeat the process with a larger size. You can do this as many times as you like, until the rod no longer slides in easily. Then you’re done and your sub is at his ‘tax’. You can then continue with a smaller size, but don’t force anything.

Burning sensation

After sounding, you may experience a burning sensation when urinating. There may also be a small amount of blood. In that case, a small vein has been hit. If the burning sensation persists for a longer period of time or if you continue to lose blood, don’t hesitate to visit your doctor.

I am writing here about the use of sounding in men, but sounding is also perfectly suitable for women. The procedure is the same. It is important for both partners to be as relaxed as possible.

Important tip: If the man reaches orgasm during this activity, remove the rod immediately so that the semen can escape.

Cleaning

To prevent infections, it is important to clean the sounds thoroughly before and after use. Surgical steel sounds can be boiled to kill all bacteria. If you are using silicone sounds, this is not possible and you will need to use other cleaning products. These can usually be found in medical webshops.

It is best not to use sounds for multiple people, to prevent the spread of any STIs. Play this game safely! And know what you are doing. Sounding is not a game that lends itself to a “quickie.” Take your time and know what you are doing.
