Masturbation

“Masturbation or self-pleasure” was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.

Masturbation is another word for self-gratification and refers to stimulating one’s own genitals to achieve sexual arousal, until one or more orgasms follow. For example, by jerking off, fingering oneself, or perhaps using a specific aid. However, the term masturbation is also used when one stimulates another person’s genitals with one’s hand.

Self-discovery

It is a form of self-discovery and self-expression practiced by people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. Although it is often viewed as a taboo or a source of shame, masturbation is a completely normal and natural activity that offers numerous benefits. The word “masturbation” is (possibly) derived from the Latin words mas and turbare, meaning ‘male’ and “to shake” or “to agitate.”

Most people do it

Various studies show that a vast majority of men, about 90%, and two-thirds of women have masturbated at least once. The Kinsey Report, published in the year 2000, revealed that only a small group had never masturbated. This group consisted mainly of people over 60, young people between the ages of 10 and 15, and individuals who identify with Christian political groups.

Benefits of masturbation

Masturbation can have various benefits, including relieving sexual tension, helping you learn about your own body – which can contribute to better sexual relationships – and reducing stress. It is considered a safe sexual activity by many health professionals, provided it is done safely without causing physical harm. Furthermore, it can contribute to a positive self-image and well-being through healthy exploration of one’s own body.

Misconceptions about masturbation

Despite the benefits, there are still many myths and misconceptions about masturbation. A common myth is that it is harmful to sexual relationships, whereas in reality it can help improve sexual relationships through better self-knowledge and communication about sexual preferences. The idea that masturbation is reserved only for people without sexual partners is also a misconception; many people in relationships masturbate as well, as part of their sexual expression.

Recognizing and accepting masturbation as a natural part of human sexuality can lead to a healthier attitude toward sex and one’s own body. It provides a safe space for individual exploration and can play a role in sex education by offering direct knowledge about sexual response and pleasure.

Masturbation and BDSM

Masturbation can also play a role within BDSM. A good example of this is chastity control, where the ability to masturbate is taken away. But, for example, having to ask the Dominant for permission to orgasm is also frequently used within BDSM.

Fun masturbation games can include:

  1. Masturbation where the orgasm must occur within a certain number of counts (or else, tough luck!).
  2. Masturbation with a ban on orgasm until the Dominant says it’s allowed.
  3. Having the sub use a die to determine exactly how many minutes and seconds they have to reach orgasm. Too late or too early is not acceptable.
  4. An order to masturbate in public (e.g., in the restroom at work or a restaurant). And who knows, maybe someday in a truly public place.
  5. Having your sub masturbate while you administer painful stimuli.
  6. Having to maintain an erection while rubbing an ice cube (until it’s completely melted) over his balls.
  7. Being forced to masturbate to orgasm 6 times in a single day. For example, every hour on the hour.
  8. Playing with chastity, for example using a chastity belt.
  9. Masturbating using sex toys such as a mandatory butt plug.
  10. Enjoying the other person’s masturbation while you yourself are tied up (with a mask over your head) in the corner.
