What is a Karwats?

“What is a Karwats?” was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.

A Karwats? A karwats is a type of whip with a short handle and a long, flexible strap or cord. It is traditionally used for herding livestock, such as horses and cattle, but can also be used for other purposes, such as in certain sports or as part of traditional attire in certain cultures. The design and length can vary depending on the specific use. Over the years, the karwats has also been used symbolically in literature and film to express power or authority.

Karwats

History

The word “karwats” originated as a variant of “karbats,” which is spelled ‘carbats’ and means “whip,” a term borrowed from Russian. It was first recorded in 1616 and in 1724 as “karwats.”

Corporal Punishment

In the past, however, the karwats was also used for corporal punishment, both in legal contexts and in disciplinary situations within, for example, the military, schools, and households. This use as a means of corporal punishment has now declined or been completely banned in many cultures and countries due to changing views on human rights and punishment.

Within BDSM, of course, entirely different rules apply, so the Karwats still makes regular appearances there! Actually, it’s a bit like a flogger.

Role-playing

Because the Karwats has such a rich history and was also used in the past as a disciplinary measure in boarding schools and households, it is an excellent tool to use in an “old-school setting” or a “Mommy’s mad” scenario.
