Definition of sounding
Sounding is a form of medically inspired BDSM play in which a rod (a sound or dilator) is carefully inserted into the urethra. It can evoke both physical and mental sensations, and demands the utmost care, hygiene and experience.

Getting started with sounds!
In this blog we're getting started with sounds! Perhaps you have heard something about sounding before? You may even be interested in it, but you don't really know how to begin. Sounding has nothing to do with music or noise, in any case. Although some subs do make noise during the experience. I once had a sub who came spontaneously to an orgasm when the second sound was inserted. And that certainly didn't happen without noise…
Sounding is part of “Nursery” or “Medical Play”, and sounding is about inserting a narrow object into the urethra. These objects are called “sounds”, “dilators”, “penis plug” or “urethra plug”. Other names for sounding are: cock stuffing or dilator play.
What is the point of sounding?
Sounding is typically an experience where you love it, or you hate it. Some people shudder at the idea, while others find the idea of being penetrated in their penis an more than exciting thought. These men experience it as sexual pleasure.
With sounding, you stimulate the urethra by penetrating it with dilators, which can give an arousing feeling. This way you can even reach the prostate. Part of the experience is about the actual sensation, but the Dominant's ultimate interest in the cock also certainly plays a part in the sensation. As does watching the dilator disappear into the cock. The combination can be quite stimulating and can lead to an orgasm.
But yes, if you have never done it before, it's wise to first find out more about it. Because, as with many activities, you can damage the urethra if you use it incorrectly. And that is of course not the intention.
How do you go about it?
What you need for sounding: dilator(s), alcohol, tissues, a kidney dish, lubricant, latex gloves and an enthusiastic sub. There are, however, also men who dare to do this to themselves.
Hygiene plays an important role in this kind of play. So before you start, make sure that the equipment you are going to use is clean. And when I say “clean”, I really mean clean, so disinfected.
Put on a pair of latex (disposable) gloves yourself.
Take a clean kidney dish and put a few tissues in it.
Clean the dilators you are going to use with alcohol and place them on the tissues.
Make sure the alcohol has completely evaporated before you use the dilators. So don't put one straight into the urethra!
Choose a suitable dilator, one of the smallest but not the very smallest. That one is nice and thin, but because of that it can also be sharp. A (too) thin dilator can undesirably perforate the soft, vulnerable tissue of the urethra. With all the consequences that come with it. It's best to start from size 2 (if you have several sizes).
Before you let a dilator slide into the urethra, first coat it with lubricant by letting a little run over the tip. Do not touch the tip again afterwards, because you have already disinfected it with alcohol. Don't use too much lubricant, because you don't want your dilator to become too slippery and slip out of your hands.
Hold the dilator at the end with one hand, and with your other hand take the cock and hold it well upright (at a 90-degree angle from the body). You don't need to squeeze it, but it is important that you have a good hold of it.
Let gravity do the work
Now let the dilator slide calmly into the urethra. Above all, don't apply pressure, and let gravity do its work. If it doesn't slide in, you don't force it, you simply take it out again. Maybe better next time.
If the dilator does slide in calmly, you can stimulate the sensation further by gently moving the dilator back and forth a little, or by making small circles with it. Make sure you do everything very calmly and force nothing.
After a few minutes you can take the sound out and try one size bigger. The handling of the next dilator is exactly the same as with the first. So here too you first apply a little lubricant again.
You can keep repeating this until you feel too much resistance in the penis and the dilator no longer slides in by itself, without applying pressure. But never force anything! Because if you push through when it really isn't possible any more, you will tear the urethra, and that is of course never the intention!
What if it doesn't work?
That can happen, and then there's nothing wrong. Sounding is a skill you have to learn by doing it. You have to gain confidence in it and be able to relax completely, and there is a big chance that you will have some difficulty with that the first time. A first time like that is a bit scary, even if you really want it. You will notice that the more you practise, the easier it will get.
Dilators and orgasm
If you feel you are close to an orgasm, always remove the dilator or penis plug, to prevent the semen from having nowhere to go. You can leave a hollow plug in, because the semen can then flow out through the hollow. Solid dilators, however, must be removed before ejaculation. Do this slowly and carefully so as not to damage the urethra.
Different dilators
Dilators come in different shapes and in various materials. There are sets for sale with 4, 8 or even 14 different sizes, but you can also choose just one dilator. The model can also differ. Some sounds have a round head and others have a curved shape that lets you reach the prostate better. In addition, penis plugs are also for sale.
Which model suits you?
When you start sounding, of course you don't yet know at all which size you will like best and how far you can (and want to) go. As a beginner, you are therefore best off starting with a set containing different sizes. A set of four or at most eight dilators is more than enough. The larger sets are for more practised players. As a beginner, also preferably don't take a vibrating dilator straight away. With that you can only cause unnecessary damage. The same goes for choosing an extremely long sound. Better not to start with that either.
Sounds come in different sizes and shapes. Experience will ultimately teach you what suits you best and what you like most. Build everything up calmly and don't go straight for the extremes.
Everything has advantages and disadvantages. Stainless steel dilators are easy to clean (by boiling), but a silicone dilator is actually very nice for beginners. The soft silicone is easy to insert and feels less stiff.
Extra sensation
As a beginner, preferably don't choose the dilator in combination with electro straight away either. Together this forms the ultimate SM experience, but for that it is necessary to first have built up experience in sounding without electro. Electro dilators are made specially to be used in combination with current and will stimulate the cock even more intensely. From the inside you can now experience the electro pulses… How intense is that! But only suitable for the experienced sounder!
Cleaning the dilators
Clean the dilators afterwards. If they are stainless steel, you can choose to boil them for 15 minutes, so that you know for sure they are properly clean again for next time. Never forget this step! Not even if you only use the dilators for yourself. After all, you don't want to run the risk of getting an infection of the urethra.
Silicone sounds can be cleaned with warm water and an antibacterial soap, and then with alcohol.
Always store the dilators in a protective case until the next use. And at the next use, always start by cleaning the dilator with alcohol again.
After sounding
Afterwards, drink enough water to flush the bladder well. The urethra may still feel a little burning afterwards, and you may even see a little blood in your urine. If all is well, this is only temporary. If it continues to bother you, however, contact your GP to have them check whether you might have an infection. Do not simply carry on walking around with it.
