What does “swinging” mean?
“What does swinging mean?” was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.
Swinger culture is not strictly part of BDSM, but you’re likely to come across the term here and there, so here’s a brief explanation. Swinger culture refers to the practice in which partners in a romantic or sexual relationship engage in sexual activities with other partners. This can take place at a swingers’ club or other similar venues. It is often seen as a form of open relationship or non-monogamy, in which both partners give consent and often participate in these activities together. Previously, “swinging” was also known by the term “partner swapping.”

So if your partner asks one day, “Hey honey, shall we go swinging tonight?” At least you’ll know you don’t necessarily have to polish your dancing shoes.
Different Forms
Swinging takes various forms within the context of a relationship. Some couples seek sexual interactions with each other, while others focus more on the flirtatious aspect. Couples interested in swinging often find each other through specific dating sites. The physical encounters can take place in private settings or in clubs specifically designed for this purpose, known as couples’ clubs, which provide facilities for these erotic exchanges.
Swinging involves a group sexual setting, often consisting of multiple married couples. An essential element is the erotic atmosphere; a meeting between married couples without this element does not qualify as swinging.
A milder form of swinging involves flirting between partners from different couples. Another subtle variation is known as “mélangisme” in French, in which married couples cuddle and kiss each other. “Same-room” sex, in which couples have sex with their own partners in the same room, involves a voyeuristic and exhibitionistic element, but is sometimes not considered “true” swinging. The term “soft swap” is used in English to describe a form of partner exchange that does not involve sexual intercourse, but does include other forms of intimate contact, such as kissing, caressing, and oral sex.
The term “full swap” refers to a complete form of partner exchange that includes penetration.
Different from cuckolding
It is important to emphasize that in swinging, mutual consent and open communication among all parties involved are essential. It can be seen as a way to explore sexual experiences within the safe boundaries of an agreed-upon relationship structure. It is therefore different from cuckolding, in which the (male) partner is only allowed to watch while the woman has her own fun with another man (or men).
