“No Nut November: from internet challenge to playful month of desire” was written for BDSMforyou.nl by Mistress Moriah.
October has by now become a fixture in many BDSM circles as Locktober: the month in which chastity and wearing a chastity cage take centre stage. As soon as that period is over, the next well-known internet challenge follows straight away: No Nut November. And it lends itself perfectly to carrying on with desire and control in a different, playful way.

A whole month without coming. For some it feels like a heavy task, for others like an appealing way to build tension. Within a D/s relationship in particular it can be a lovely challenge: you decide if, when and how a release is allowed, while your partner's desire only grows. But you don't need a BDSM relationship to take part. Couples who simply want to shake up their sex life can have some fun with it too.
What actually is No Nut November?
No Nut November (abbreviated NNN) is an annual internet challenge in which participants try not to have an orgasm for the whole of November. The word “nut” is American slang for coming or ejaculating.
The challenge originated around 2011 with an entry on Urban Dictionary and, from about 2017, grew into a widely known phenomenon through memes, Reddit, social media and online communities. Originally it was partly meant as satire, in the vein of other monthly challenges. Some participants attach more serious goals to it (discipline, less porn use), while others mainly keep it light and playful.
The rules are not officially set down and differ per group or per agreement:
The strictest version forbids any orgasm, whether alone or with a partner.
Other interpretations focus mainly on avoiding masturbation.
Wet dreams almost always don't count, because they are involuntary.
Originally NNN was aimed mainly at men, but anyone can take part. For women it logically comes down to delaying or avoiding the orgasm itself. The most important thing is to agree clearly beforehand what is and isn't allowed. As soon as the tension rises, people become remarkably creative with the rules.
From Locktober to No Nut November
Locktober is a real and growing phenomenon within BDSM and kink communities. It's about chastity in October, often with a chastity cage and a keyholder who keeps the key. Some participants let Locktober flow seamlessly into No Nut November.
The difference is a useful one. Locktober emphasises wearing a cage and the keyholder's control. No Nut November is specifically about going without an orgasm. That means sexual stimulation, arousal or even sex during November are perfectly fine, as long as the agreed limit isn't crossed.
Imagine the cage is allowed off on 1 November after a month of Locktober, but coming is still off the table. That opens up all kinds of new possibilities for building desire and playing with control. Within a consensual D/s dynamic that can be particularly effective.
The art of desire
Orgasm control goes further than simply delaying something. It plays with expectation, attention and the way someone experiences arousal. When an orgasm is not an option for the time being, ordinary touches, glances or messages suddenly carry more charge.
In a D/s relationship, the voluntary handover of control comes on top of that. No matter how much your partner wants it, they don't decide about the release themselves - within the agreements you've made together. That contrast between desire and surrender is, for many people, exactly what makes it exciting.
How do you make No Nut November exciting?
A month without orgasm quickly becomes boring if you don't do anything else with it. With a bit of attention and teasing, there is plenty to get out of it.
Small daily tasks
You don't have to plan a long session every day. Have your partner report in the morning how many days it has been and how the desire feels. Attach a short task to it: writing a love letter, kneeling for a few minutes, or an unexpected message during the day that subtly refers to the desire. Small things often work better than big spectacles.
Edging
Edging - stimulating right up to the brink of orgasm and then stopping - is a classic way to play with orgasm control. Repeat it a few times and the arousal builds higher and higher. Keep it pleasant for both of you: prolonged stimulation can cause sensitivity or irritation, and someone must always be able to say when it's enough. An “accidental” orgasm is a pity for the challenge, but not a disaster.
Dice or chance
If you run out of inspiration, you can use chance. With a kinky dice game (Kinky Dice Game) or tasks you've devised yourselves, you sometimes discover things you wouldn't have thought of straight away. Agree that the outcome fits within your limits and the NNN agreements.
A reward system
Some people respond well to points or rewards for every day without an orgasm, extra tasks or initiative. Exchange those points for attention, a massage or a special session. Do be careful about promising an orgasm as the “final reward”. Dominance also means handling the trust someone gives you with care. Expectations that turn out differently later can cause frustration.
A month of teasing and challenging
No Nut November lends itself perfectly to tease and denial. Enjoy attention, touch and closeness together without every encounter ending in release. For example, have your partner briefly write down every evening what was going on that day: frustration, calm, desire or a mix of those. Those conversations often yield more than you expect beforehand. And don't forget humour - a teasing smile at the right moment can sometimes have more effect than an elaborate task.
No Nut November for women
Although NNN is originally known mainly as a challenge for men, women can take part just as well. The difference lies mostly in the experience: for men the ejaculation is often central, for women the orgasm itself. Some women discover that more attention goes to other forms of intimacy and mental tension when an orgasm is no longer the obvious end goal. Others find long-term abstinence restless or irritating. There is no standard reaction; what matters is what the two of you enjoy.
What if you can't keep it up?
NNN began as an internet challenge and is not an official BDSM tradition. There is no authority checking whether you stick to the rules. Coming on 17 November is therefore no earth-shattering failure.
Within a consensual D/s relationship you can agree playful consequences beforehand (an extra task, a funny assignment or a short report). Don't turn it into a matter of personal failure. An orgasm is a normal physical reaction. Make sure both partners feel safe enough to be honest. And if the challenge turns out to be less fun than expected along the way, simply adjust the agreements or stop.
Is a month without orgasm actually healthy?
All kinds of claims circulate online: a huge rise in testosterone, more energy, better concentration and more self-confidence. There is insufficient scientific evidence for those big promises. A well-known 2003 study about a testosterone peak on day 7 was later retracted and in any case showed no lasting effect. Smaller studies show at most temporary or limited changes.
For most healthy adults, a period without orgasm is not harmful in itself. The body doesn't need a mandatory monthly number of orgasms. In men, sperm cells that are not expelled are eventually broken down and absorbed. During sleep, a spontaneous ejaculation can occur. Some people experience a heavy or painful feeling in the genitals temporarily during prolonged arousal without release; that usually goes away by itself. Persistent or severe pain is a reason to seek medical help.
If you use a chastity cage, pay extra attention to hygiene, fit and the condition of the skin. Pain, numbness, swelling or discolouration are signs to remove the device immediately.
And then it's 1 December…
After thirty days, No Nut November is officially over. For some, that is a moment they've been longing for. Perhaps you'll end the month with a special session, or the submissive will finally be given permission to come after weeks of carefully built-up desire. It may also be that you enjoy orgasm control so much that you carry on with it (in part).
The best thing about challenges like this is often not the perseverance itself, but what you discover along the way about yourself or about each other. You start with a playful idea that once arose on the internet and sometimes end with new insights into desire, control and intimacy.
So if you thought after Locktober that all the challenges were over: November has only just begun. And who knows what your Dominant - or the two of you together - will make of it.
Are you up for the challenge?
