Without mutual consent there is no room for BDSM, but there is no room without trust either. The sub must trust the Dominant, but the reverse is just as true. Trust between a Dominant and a sub is definitely not a one-way street. Unfortunately, in all sorts of BDSM information I often see only the sub's trust highlighted. That's a shame, because a Dominant's trust in a sub is at least as important. Trust is the foundation of the entire BDSM experience. Without it, everything collapses like a house of cards.

The importance of trust in BDSM

Unfortunately this isn't always how it is viewed, but during a BDSM experience a Dominant makes themselves at least as vulnerable. If the sub damages this trust, in whatever way, it can have major consequences for the whole dynamic and can even mean the end of a D/s relationship.

Trust: the cornerstone of intimacy

Trust matters in every relationship, but within BDSM it takes on an extra dimension. The nature of BDSM practices requires deep mutual understanding and respect. When someone surrenders to another person, literally and figuratively, a vulnerability arises that can only be caught by a solid safety net of trust. This safety net ensures that both parties feel safe to explore their limits and perhaps even push them.

Deeply involved

A strong Dominant is not someone who simply commands and punishes, but someone who is deeply involved in the emotional and physical state of a sub. A Dominant must constantly attune, pick up on signals and sense where the sub is (mentally and physically) and respond to that. This requires a great deal of emotional intelligence and dedication. If, for example, certain actions of the Dominant are met by the sub with anger or explosive behaviour, the Dominant's trust, and with it the basis of the BDSM experience, is thrown overboard in one go.

This can also happen, for example, when a sub abuses the Dominant's goodwill, by manipulating, being unreliable, offering no reciprocity or not keeping agreements. All of these things can completely undermine the Dominant's trust.

Why can the BDSM experience fall apart?

A BDSM dynamic is based on honesty and authenticity. If a sub is not trustworthy, cracks appear in this foundation. Think, for example, of a sub who:

Is insincere about limits and feelings
causing the Dominant to make wrong decisions and possibly cross a line that was never meant to be crossed.

Doesn't keep agreements
which leads to frustration and a loss of control for the Dominant.

Manipulates or tests in unhealthy ways
causing the Dominant to constantly doubt the sincerity of the surrender.

Withholds secrets
such as earlier traumas or mental health challenges, meaning the Dominant can cause harm without knowing it.

An unexpected angry/aggressive/condescending reaction from the sub
When a sub reacts angrily and unexpectedly, especially in a way that is destructive or unpredictable, this can have major consequences for both the Dominant and the dynamic itself.

Why can this be so damaging?

BDSM is not about purely physical acts, but about a deep psychological interplay. When a sub reacts angrily in a way the Dominant did not see coming, it can disrupt the entire trust and flow of the dynamic. This can happen in several ways:

The Dominant loses the sense of control

A Dominant makes decisions based on all kinds of motives: agreements, purpose, moment, the sub's interests, et cetera.
If a sub suddenly reacts explosively (in a negative way), it can feel like a total breakdown of mutual understanding. The Dominant may feel they have to walk on eggshells, or that their actions are no longer safe to repeat, which disrupts the intensity of the experience. In fact, from that moment on, a game based on trust, which is absolutely essential when searching for limits, for example, is never possible again. The magic is gone for ever.

After all, the Dom(me) depends on that sense of trust to find limits and, where necessary, stretch them. She/he should be able to trust that any little mistakes or miscalculations will be "forgiven" just as much as the other way round. After a breach of trust, however, this is no longer possible. She will always keep that outburst in the back of her mind, so that play can never again take place in full trust. There's a reason people say: "Trust arrives on foot and leaves on horseback." And a breach of trust is hard to truly repair. The scars will always remain.

The dynamic has disappeared

In a BDSM relationship there is usually a clear division of roles. A sub who suddenly lashes out in anger, without respect for the agreed structure, breaks this dynamic wide open. This can feel like a form of rebellion, not in a playful or consensual way, but in a destructive way that undermines the basis of the relationship. You don't just get that dynamic back. "A plaster and a kiss to make it better", as you might do after a slip-up, won't work. The dynamic carries the experience; if it is disrupted, you are tearing down the foundation, and everything becomes shaky.

Everything revolves around honesty

The Dominant must be able to trust that a sub communicates honestly and openly, both within and outside the experience. Anger can sometimes stem from unspoken frustrations or underlying emotions that were never put into words. This can lead to the feeling that the sub has kept things hidden, leaving the Dominant feeling fooled and no longer able to rely on the other's honesty.

It is therefore vital that a sub raises dissatisfaction or unrest in good time and doesn't wait until an "explosive moment". Always keep communicating honestly and openly if you want to continue together for longer. If the sub hasn't mentioned things earlier, despite the space offered to him, then the Dom(me) may trust that he is on the right track.

It can cause a negative spiral

Because of the sub's unexpected explosive reaction, the Dominant may become more hesitant and dare less, and the sub may then become frustrated because the Dominant takes less initiative. This can lead to a downward spiral in which both parties no longer feel safe in their role. You can imagine that this means the beginning of the end. Especially when the D/s is not based on a "stage play" but is experienced from a natural feeling.

The consequences for the Dominant

Damaged trust can weigh heavily on a Dominant emotionally. Although it is often thought that it is the sub who is vulnerable, this applies just as much to the Dominant. When a sub breaks trust, this can lead to:

Doubt about your own abilities as a Dominant – "Did I overlook something?"

A loss of enjoyment and fulfilment in the role – BDSM is meant to be a profound, sometimes even healing experience. If trust is betrayed, that feeling of magic can disappear.

No way forward any more

In fact, after a breach of trust there is no way forward any more. Once trust has gone, the whole foundation has actually gone, or at the very least become shaky. True surrender doesn't just mean obedience or servitude, but also honest communication, taking responsibility and showing that you, as a sub, can be trusted.

In short: if a sub damages a Dominant's trust, for example by reacting unexpectedly angrily/aggressively, the essence of their dynamic crumbles away. And without that foundation, little remains except disappointment and loss. BDSM is not a game; it is a deep, sincere experience that only works if both parties fulfil their roles with integrity and respect.
